2023 Misc Braves Talk

Ozuna getting to a 900 OPS is not something I had on my 2023 Braves bingo card. And I was probablly Ozuna's biggest fan/defender on the site.
That was easily our worst contract and he’s been a bargain this year.

I’d still be shocked if he’s still good at this point but it’s crazy that we might end up picking that option up in 2 years.

Here’s the question: this season makes Ozuna very tradeable this off-season with only a 1 year commitment required, and the potential for someone to add a middle of the order bat to their lineup.

Do you get value for him this off-season or do you count on him repeating this next year and holding on to a very valuable bat?

AA will look at his peripherals.

his bat speed, exit velo, chase rate, etc. Is it sustainable.

I don’t know how many teams would be willing to give up prospect value for essentially a full time DH in his mid 30’s. For all we know AA just might acquire a backup catcher, use Travis as a full time DH. Maybe he gets a new platoon. Heyward with a righty or re-sign Pillar.

AA isn’t gonna trade away Marcel’s 15 million then let it sit untouched. He’s gonna use it.

We’re not going to get premium talent for him, but someone out there will def be willing to take on his contract for a little something.

I said this earlier in the season: I think Ozuna benefits from the rule changes in a major way. He‘s a guy who clearly has some anxiety/hyperactivity issues (maybe even worse before this season), and that lead to an erosion in his plate discipline. Quite simply, he didn‘t have the patience to wait out a couple of balls and a throw-over to first. At some point, he would start swinging, no matter where the pitch was. This season, knowing that he‘s getting another pitch within 15 seconds, he seems far more relaxed and selective.

Taking a step back...

We may just set the all time home run record, and Braves win record / run differential. We've hopefully got the MVP (and one the best players of all time at least just based on his peak performance) and 6 of our 8 position players are locked-up long-term. We are about to get our 6 division in a row and already have one WS on the resume and two NLCS appearances. Impossible to predict WS titles in the randomness of post season baseball, but at least based on regular season merits, we may just have a dynasty in the making. Fun time to be a Braves fan

We also may have the Cy Young

What

He thinks the pitch clock helps Ozuna. Less delays in between pitches. He feels Ozuna is the type of player/personality that likes to be engaged in the box and get the pitch asap rather than deal with pickoffs, set, reset, set, timeout, etc.

Ozuna doesn't appear to have one of those long rituals in the box, have to retighten or restrap his gloves. Just sort of steps in, rotates the bat two times and is ready to swing.

Just as some pitchers like to get the ball back from the catcher and go right back at the hitter, he's saying he thinks Ozuna is a hitter that wants the pitcher to come right back at it. Quick at-bats. Not necessarily quick as in let's get this AB over in 2 pitches, but speed up the duration of an AB.

Hold him. There's no long term risk in keeping him and finding a replacement will either take a lot of prospect capital or a long term commitment. I believe he has an option after 2024 so I will take the upside of potentially a big bat for 2 years over what we could get in a trade. Ozuna has never had back to back great years though. What we would get back just isn't worth it.

I'd keep Ozuna, not like he's making a ton of money. Only like 16 million or so, hardly franchise crippling. We'd get like a lottery ticket or two in trade if that, not worth it.

I’d keep Ozuna, let Rosario walk and try to upgrade LF.

Maybe upgrade via trade. The current FA class isnt that great. You have David Peralta, Joc, Lourdes Gurriel (would require a long-term commitment), there is Bellinger as well but he likes playing CF and will cost a ton plus the Cubs will do everything they can to keep him.

Eddie for 9M is more than fine tbh for 1 more year. There's not a whole lot the following year other than Soto unless AA is saving money for him lol.
