I think most of us actually support Hamas and other terrorists.

who are the leftists who have been trying to kill Trump ChatGPT said: There is no credible public evidence that a major coordinated “leftist” group has been trying to kill Donald Trump. But there are individuals who have made threats, been charged in plots, or attempted assassination, and in...

Trade with China was an asterisk as recently as 1980. By then the supremacy of Silicon Valley was already established. I don't think trade with China has much to do with the area's technological supremacy. It has mainly to do with a superb secondary educational system and a culture of...

Oh I'm not saying she can't do anything about it. Local governments in blue states tend to be overly restrictive with permitting and zoning laws. They can certainly change those laws to increase the supply of housing and lower living costs. And they should. Remember I'm a big fan of YIMBY...

Board leader can tell you about Savannah, Charleston, etc. And that's just his neck of the woods. Places endowed with beauty as well as natural harbors that can be transformed into large commercial ports. There are reasons that they (and many other places) did not become a world beating...

sure...many of them are located near natural ports...what they don't have is a system of higher education like California's...that kind of system is not cheap...it requires a commitment and tax dollars...if Leave Me Alone is your default setting you don't vote for something like that

And made it so technologically advanced. News flash: there are more beautiful places than Northern California. None on the technological cutting edge.

Yes. Many things. Some amenable to public policy. Obesity and lung cancer are not just determined by the fates. I guess if Leave Me Alone is your preferred setting those thangs are just part of the price of being left alone. 7 years of life is a helluva price.

I guess red states are just fated not to be heaven on earth or something like that. Just unlucky.

San Francisco has actually shown an ability to self-correct from a course that wasn't working too well for its citizens. Places like Oklahoma and Arkansas not so much.

I'm not denying that. Just like California has the motion picture industry and Silicon Valley. But it is also a fact that life expectancy between states like Oklahoma and states like New York had converged by the 1960s. Since then we have had this big divergence. 7 years of life is a lot...

I think that about summarizes y'all's views on this. Blue states bring about misfortune due to bad policy. Red states are just fated to be mediocre. And they are incredibly mediocre when you look at things like technological innovation and the culture that underpins it. The things that...

There is an interesting study that looks at the counties clustered around where NY, PA and OH meet. Ohio takes a Leave Me Alone approach to smoking. NY takes a very pro-active anti-smoking approach. PA is in between. Decades ago incidence of lung cancer was the same in those counties. Now...

Having good political choices makes a big difference. California was better governed when it alternated Republican and Democratic governors. That's why I hope to see the Republicans return to running and nominating serious people in states like Calfironia.

You're a Leave Me Alone Guy. Oklahoma leaves people alone. Those are the results. NY has robust efforts to suppress thangs like smoking.

60 years ago NY and Oklahoma were neck and neck in life expectancy. NY was much richer then too. The divergence since has other explanations.

If you disaggregate the data you will find that life expectancy in NY has risen relative to Oklahoma for whites, blacks and every other ethnic group. Changes in population mix (such as more Asians in NY than 60 years ago) can account for only a tiny part of the divergence.
