I think that about summarizes y'all's views on this. Blue states bring about misfortune due to bad policy. Red states are just fated to be mediocre. And they are incredibly mediocre when you look at things like technological innovation and the culture that underpins it. The things that really matter as Joel Mokyr has shown so skillfully! I read Culture of Growth this past summer. Highly recommend for anyone who wants to understand the Industrial Revolution as well as our times.

Are you denying that New York was setup as the financial center of the world 100 years ago?

Are you denying that California is one of the most beautiful places in the world and silicon valley framework was established 30+ years ago?

It will take another decade for the mass exodous out of California to harm them economically.

Maybe they get their shit together and actually support their citizens more than their criminals. I don't think that BL will have these same arguments on Cali though in a decade if we are still around bitchin at each other.

I'm not denying that. Just like California has the motion picture industry and Silicon Valley.

But it is also a fact that life expectancy between states like Oklahoma and states like New York had converged by the 1960s. Since then we have had this big divergence. 7 years of life is a lot. Even for the Leave Me Alone Brigade.

So you are denying advances in overall healthcare and mostly preventive healthcare that rich people can afford abvoe anyone else?

San Francisco has actually shown an ability to self-correct from a course that wasn't working too well for its citizens. Places like Oklahoma and Arkansas not so much.

Geez has anything happened since the 60s that would disproportionately enrich one state vs another?

I guess you need a PhD to know that rich people live longer, and rich states give away more health services than poorer states

Its not this - Its the availability of preventive health care that people making above 200K can afford to incorporate into their daily lives.

Again, the original designation of NYC as the financial capital of the owrld is the original driver.

Yes. Many things. Some amenable to public policy. Obesity and lung cancer are not just determined by the fates. I guess if Leave Me Alone is your preferred setting those thangs are just part of the price of being left alone. 7 years of life is a helluva price.

sure...many of them are located near natural ports...what they don't have is a system of higher education like California's...that kind of system is not cheap...it requires a commitment and tax dollars...if Leave Me Alone is your default setting you don't vote for something like that

Please give me your comparables so we can evaluate.

Acting as if anything other than Californias natural beauty & bountiful natural resources is what made Cali the powerhouse that it is today is a funny position to take.

PA is in between. Decades ago incidence of lung cancer was the same in those counties. Now there are big differences. Public health policy matters. Yugely. Other policies on things like education matter. Yugely.

I'm not saying that blue states are perfect. Hochul should be trying to make sure that young talented people want to come, stay and contribute to the economy of her state (i'm not sure she can do much about the folks who have made it and now want to retire somewhere warmer and cheaper). But 7 years extra of life is a yuge thang. It more than offsets a lot of thangs blue states dont get right. And it is worth paying some taxes for.
