Around the League: 2017 offseason edition / 2018 Season

Sure, but they will have the ability to sign multiple Braves prospects and have 4 picks in the top 40 of the draft this season. If you want to jump-start a team's rebuild, that's a pretty good way to begin.

Going, going gone: Braves' lost prospects' new teams

They were allowed to negotiate immediately, just not sign officially.

Going, going gone: Braves' lost prospects' new teams

There is more to the punishment than could be put into press. This punishment was for actions well beyond anything that MLB had punished before, so the punishment was going to be beyond anything seen before. The players had no idea the Braves should not have been able to offer them money. They...

Going, going gone: Braves' lost prospects' new teams

The exact dollar amount means nothing. Many guys will get paid significantly less because there's no money left for a lot of teams or they're holding out for another guy right at the moment. The one guy you'll see that was a good sign of an overpay was Gutierrez, but everyone knew that when he...

So how do the Braves use the money that they won't be allowed to spend on Int FA

You're lovely with reading comprehension. Pearson and Banuelos were ranked something like the 85th and 90th in pre-draft rankings. Pearson very likely would have been much higher had he not already been 19. These are both guys who would figure in the top 50 of the Braves. That is very...

Discussion of Braves 2018 Offseason plans

....I'd offer more for Odorizzi than Archer. Not what's discussed here, but Archer is well overrated.

Discussion of Braves 2018 Offseason plans

Worse, he looked absolutely spent on the field at the time. He was dragging HARD when he was called up. The call up lit a fire under him again, but that is like downing a cup of coffee to get a few more hours of work rather than resting. You don't get the sleep you need in the end and pay for it...

    Identifying BP Conversion Candidates

I mentioned this to one of my co-editors at one of my sites, and he is a Royals fan. He's not a fan, but I then explained that Peralta's sinker is an absolute beast of a pitch, and while it's the same average velo of a pitch as his four-seamer, it doesn't have the same velocity peak, just a ton...

Around the League: 2017 offseason edition / 2018 Season

They were making a legit push, but they're also presenting a significant offer for Darvish, which the same beat guy says will give Darvish the ability to earn more than anywhere else, but the structure will be heavily into years 3-4, as the team is trimming down significant salary after 2018 and...

Around the League: 2017 offseason edition / 2018 Season

Twins beat guy reported that the Twins official who received notification from Ohtani's camp that they were out said the list was the Cubs, Mariners, Dodgers, Angels, Padres, and Giants. Brian Cashman said that a team "on the West Coast in a small market" would be very happy with Ohtani's final...

    Notable 2017 Non-Tenders

Surprised that Hughes was mentioned over Bruce Rondon, and frankly, I'd take a healthy Zach Putnam or Jake Petricka from the White Sox over Hughes as well. He's just nothing special at all....

Discussion of Braves 2018 Offseason plans

Interestingly, all three Mariners who were there when Kiley was working with Fangraphs got absolutely glowing reviews from him. I wonder how much his influence had on their acquisition, especially since he's the one who wanted out of the front office and back into the field to do more direct...

    Rule 5

...or an NL team willing to let him play C/1B and pinch hit a bunch while working with someone they believe is very good instructing behind the plate. I don't disagree, though. He's not the top rule 5 option, but he certainly will draw interest and dismissing him as if he won't is foolhardy.

Discussion of Braves 2018 Offseason plans

Writing about the scouting I do is my job. I don't watch every second of between inning stuff, which cuts a 3-hour game down by almost half, especially when you can jump forward on pitching changes and other such things as well. So when you can turn 300 hours of game film into 150 hours of time...

Exactly, primarily as a defensive replacement as well. I think he had something like 250 plate appearances.

Discussion of Braves 2018 Offseason plans

Don't disagree there at all. I like Moore more as a "manager" and less of the hands-on stuff. The idea of Moore as president of baseball ops with another as a GM is the only way I was on board with him coming to the team, but the Royals wanted much too much in return.

Discussion of Braves 2018 Offseason plans

No, I said the player the team traded for $1.25M of IFA money would rank better for me than Waters in my 2018 prospect list. Heck, I'm not sure I'd even hold to Ventura better than Waters if you asked me to project 5 years, but right now, I see a higher floor for Ventura's developed skills and...

Discussion of Braves 2018 Offseason plans

The league would laugh at you. The Twins and Brewers are considered two of the most intelligent front offices in the league. The Twins hired Falvey and Levine and have been widely praised for their re-make of the organization (including a now-top 10 farm system). The Brewers continually have...

Discussion of Braves 2018 Offseason plans

Laughable comment, considering he had lost in the range of 60 pounds before that 2016 season that got the attention of many around the game who weren't already paying attention. Gohara has worked hard to make changes to his diet and self-care. Some guys don't hold weight well, but Gohara is one...

    Rule 5

Might be the first you can remember, but it's happened previously. Everth Cabrera had never played above A-ball (and only had a handful of games even at high-A) before being selected and sticking for a full season and starting most of the year. Johan Santana had never thrown above A ball. Those...
