    4/16: strider is back

I always have had the impression that AA didn't want to keep Snit but has no choice. Especially due to the success of the team since AA has been here. Feels like it would be a PR disaster to fire a manager who hasn't even missed the playoffs since AA got here.

    Offseason Hot Stove 2024-25 Thread

In your opinion, was there a realistic way to reset the luxury tax this off-season and also get a high grade? Frustrating this has to happen during a prime contention window season. But I'm hopeful because the long term success of the organization seems to be in mind.

    Bravos sign Profar.

I agree with your C rating because he's such a wild card. But have to keep in mind, most free agents this off season have blown out their projections and got way more. So the scale has changed a bit. Getting someone at their projected value this off season hasn't been a given.

Very frustrating off season for sure. But I'm interested to see how these next few weeks develop. There is still some talent out there and most of the teams who had plans to spend this off season have already spent. The rest of the league is either cutting payroll or holding steady due to...

We know AA learned in the Dodgers front office for a few years, and as the model organization, they keep things pretty close to the vest over there too.

But that was his second Tommy John surgery, and there is no guarantee he will recover to the point he was previously. For me personally, just too risky to spend $21 million on. I'd prefer a more known quantity as an alternative.

But there was also a noticable decline in his stuff/rates pre surgery in 2022.

Beuhler was easily one of the worst pitchers in the league last year. And he happened to put together 1 dominant start in the playoffs which led us to this contract. Wild.

Agreed. And we've seen so many examples of meddling owners being the downfall of organizations. I wasn't always a fan of having a corporate ownership but the way it's played out has been ideal.

Here's another thought to consider. It was rumored the Braves organization would be for sale at some point in the near future, especially considering they released the stock as a way to track the value. Wonder if that has any impact on spending.

Series question. How much, if at all, would it help our contention window to stay open longer if we dipped under the luxury tax threshold this year?

The Padres are trying to cut payroll so they are trying to find creative ways to cut salary and improve at the same time.

You make good points. The only thing I'll add is I'm actually curious to see how the second half of this off season plays out as far as spending. Because it appears you have the high payroll teams flush with cash (especially those with revenue certainty from their TV Networks), and then the...

I kinda get the sense that what we might see happen is AA wait around until late in the off season to see if anyone of value over priced themselves and will have to settle for a contract he's comfortable with.

It's arguable if there is even that much of a benefit to dip under the luxury tax to make it even worth it. Especially for a team squarely in their contention window. On the other hand, the team as constructed without any further moves has a high probability to make the playoffs. Especially...

I agree with you, I don't think it makes sense either considering we have nobody ready to plug the hole Albies would leave. It was a bit surprising to see Bowman even mention it.
