Phil's luck out again. That team is going to have to add serious talent in the off-season just to offset the regression they'll face
Phils down 5-2 in the 5th. Conforto with a tie-breaking 3-run HR.
The first warning, could have been a soft warning. But thankfully Pam Shriver interviewed Serena's coach immediately after it happened and he admitted it was coaching. And not coincidentally the next few points Serena did exactly what he was motioning her to do (go to the net more).
The second violation was clear. There's no leeway for a soft warning when you clearly smash and abuse the racquet.
The third violation could have gone either way. Serena was already on thin ice with two warnings, but she kept going on and on. I think where the umpire drew the line was when she called him a thief. That's where you question the integrity and motives of the umpire. It's one thing to rant (and tennis umpires probably take more verbal abuse than any other referees in any pro sport) to the umpire, it's another to accuse the umpire of basically having an agenda.
Serena's behavior was shameful, and even more shameful was the crowd boo'ing Osaka and making her cry for no reason. This is a microcosm of why the US Open has fallen in prestige to the worst slam out of the 4. Because of how the event has been run. It's a metaphor for American greed.
We've played over our heads for most of the season. This team is closer to mediocre than a playoff contender.
both need these games badly and are choking big time
