117th Congress

AOC and Whitmer have had to deal with some really awful misogyny.

Whatever their politics, it's a shame that there are men out there who have problems with women in positions of power.

And I might add this misogyny is doubly tragic given that both AOC and Whitmer have been the victims of sexual assault.

Did you just assume the gender of all the people who have a problem with women in positions of power?

4 or 5 here are hitching their wagon to this.
Usual suspects

FINALLY: Congress has introduced legislation that would effectively save

the USPS by doing away with a mandate that required it to prepay retirement

benefits decades in advance.

does that woman from Georgia have an economic plan
or any plan other than shooting people ?
and, white privilege grievance

Like I said, MTG is crazier. But I could run down a laundry list of times AOC was completely out of touch and utterly laughable. The fact you can't admit she's a ridiculous ideologue is disappointing.

Why are republicans, who always whine about “cancel culture”, trying to cancel every republican that put country over party and did the right thing by impeaching?

Comparing those 2 is like comparing getting kicked in nuts and running a bandsaw through them.

Tuberville is more of a harmless idiot. He'll basically be a proxy vote in Mitch's pocket while he's there. MTG is either dangerously stupid or frighteningly dishonest. I hope she gets primaried. I can't believe a district this solidly red can't come up with someone who can beat her.

This is the question. You live in the district so I will defer to your local knowledge. What kind of odds do you give on her getting re-elected?

We've kind of memed it here, but this is where media's partisanship and lack of credibility have an impact negative to their purpose.

This is a down home crowd that normally won't tolerate BS artists and would dislike a Fulton county fraud like MGT. Now some of them have siloed off so they will never see anything negative about her, others won't believe the reports, and others will just be glad she's willing to say some of the things they want said. I couldn't believe she won the primary. Dr. Cowan had all of the necessary policy positions, volunteered on the SWAT team, and wasn't crazy.

The problem is that the majority of the primary voters are beyond wanting someone in line with their ideology. They're pissed and they want someone who represents and speaks to the rage and frustration they feel. I think the coasts, the metros, and especially ACELA still don't have any idea of just how angry rural America has become. I thought electing Trump would get that point across, but it was easier to label us all racist Nazis than to look for valid reasons. The result of that attitude was millions more voting for him in November. Joe had a chance to speak to that and be a hero with his UNITY theme, but he's made it clear that isn't the goal. I think his hard push leftward will improve MGT's chances of reelection.

I'll just make the observation that most of us learn from our day to day lives that anger is a very poor basis for doing anything. In fact most of us would say that the worst things we've ever done in our lives probably happened in moments of anger where we indulged that anger.

A second observation which is the equivalent of advocating for apple pie is that we all have an obligation to try to find a constructive path forward that sets aside the anger. I think we can all potentially contribute to that.

I agree with you, but try an experiment for me. Watch late night TV, or CNN, or read just about anything from most print media over the past few years, or the twitter comments of anything that touches social or cultural issues. Try to consume that media as if you are a Trump voter in Nowhere, Arkansas or BFE, Montana. They aren't mad without reason, and they didn't have the platform to start the fight. They've become the butt of all the jokes that the elites used to make about hillbillies and Polocks, but now we have enlightened lefties like some on this board to demean them when they point it out.

I find CNN to be unwatchable. So don't make me do that.

With respect to the media I consume I would generally agree that most journalists are left of center. But I would also say that a good journalist, like a good judge or a good law enforcement officer, can do their job in a professional manner that renders their personal views irrelevant.

The risk that I see coming from your direction is that in rejecting "liberal media" there is a temptation to turn to sources of information that are just awful. Or that it becomes too easy to dismiss good journalism just because of who it is coming from.

I do have a sort of idiosyncratic view about what constitutes good journalistic writing. I think it should be bland. I'm sure most reporters would push back against that. But I hate seeing adverbs and adjectives in a news story. I would prefer a bland presentation of the news. But that doesn't get the clicks.
