2014 Minor League Roster thread

How about Ian Thomas, the 26 year old lefty who pitched very well for Mississippi last year, ERA 2.76, WHIP 1.045, K/9 10.6? Could he be another option as a second lefty?

He's an option. But he made a very successful transition to starting last season. I think the Braves are intrigued by the possibility of him making it as a starter and will want to see what they've got by letting him pitch in the rotation in AAA.

Agreed. I was impressed with what he did both as a reliever and starter last season.

Good pickup. He or Buchter will probably be our second lefty in the pen until Venters returns.

Yea, I expect at least one of the two has a good shot at making the team. Plus Severino is also insurance should Buchter become too wild again.

BTW, Severino is playing winter ball with Licey and put up a 2-0 record, 1.29 ERA, 14 SO, and .133 BAA in 19 games and 14 innings. His teammates included two other Braves minor signings (Vasquez and Maya), Braves top catching prospect Christian Bethancourt, Braves pitching prospect Mitch Atkins (and former Braves Juan Francisco, Jairo Asencio, Yohan Flande, etc).

Braves signed 24 year old RHP Lay Batista to a minor league deal and invited him to spring training. He pitched last season for the Angels AA affiliate starting 22 games, here's his career numbers.

Baseball America rated Batista's change-up the best among Angels prospects in 2012.

This is a shame. I see in BBA where the Braves released outfielder Chris Edmondson, denying us a chance to see if any of his 2013 was for real. They signed him out of the Can-Am League, the first player from there ever to get such a deal, and at the time he was hitting .413 with eight homers, 35 RBIs and 19 stolen bases in 36 games. He joined Rome, hit .206-1-7, but in his 10th game, hit the outfield wall hard, broke his shoulder and collarbone and was done for the year.

He was previously with the Cardinals, but was not considered a significant prospect.

Here's more on Vasquez and Batista, MLBTR reports:

"The Braves may have found yet another diamond in the rough with minor league free agent signees Luis Vasquez and Lay Batista, writes Bill Ballew of Baseball America. "We identified Vasquez and Batista as potential high-octane arms who could contribute in Atlanta as soon as 2014," said assistant GM John Coppolella."

The article at BA by Bill Ballew about Vasquez and Batista is very interesting, BA subscribers can check it out here. But for those that don't subscribe I'll share a few points of interest. Vasquez has a fastball that "sits in the mid-90s and touches 97 mph with plus movement and he complements it with a hard, sharp slider with good tilt in the mid-to-upper 80s." While Lay Batista has both a "plus fastball (90-95 mph) and a plus changeup." As I noted in another post, Batista's change-up rated the best among Angels prospects in 2012.

If y'all want to see Vasquez, Maya and other Braves (and also former Braves) in action. Licey just made the 2014 Liga Dominicana de Béisbol Final thanks to a long homerun by former Brave Juan Francisco. They were playing Gigantes in a tie breaker game, Francisco's homer in the 9th inning gave Licey a 9-8 win.

The 2014 Liga Dominicana de Béisbol Final will be available via ESPN3 live starting Monday. It seems ESPN3 will show the entire series live this week (also replay is available if miss it live).

Chris Garcia, a first baseman who played 222 games in the Braves system in 2011-12 after winning batting titles in the indy leagues, has been signed by the Mets. Garcia was injured in 2013 and was released in July, but hit .295 with 27 homers in those two seasons.

Pat Egan, the 6-7 right who took Mississippi by storm last year (7-2, 2.10, 4 saves) and who finished the year in Gwinnett, has signed with the Reds as a minor league free agent. The Braves did not retain him following the year despite appearing in 54 games (8-3, seven saves) overall. Egan is 29 going into the season.

Just saw where the Braves released Thomas Keeling, the LHP they got from Milwaukee for Francisco.

rico, those rosters look a lot like 2013's end-of-season rosters that milb page. They usually let them sit over the winter and then update them when the next season starts.

Could be, but coaching staffs were updated and free agent pickups were included (some, not all, to be sure). I will replace as available.

Those are not the updated rosters Rico. Sims and Cabrera will both be in Lynchburg so will Peraza. Reyes is starting in Rome. There are too many changes for me to name but those are just a couple key names.

Not to mention LaStella, he was supposed to make AAA, no?
