Fried should be highly rated. Yes, he got Tommy John but he was also considered the best high school lefty to be drafted since Kershaw. Glad he is getting that type of recognition. I suspect if not for the injury he would be top 20 and maybe even top 10.
 
Ruiz isn't the "best" prospect we picked up this off-season, but he might be the one I'm most excited about. Left-handed bat at a position of sore organizational need, solid plate discipline numbers and, in a perfect world, maybe just a year away. You don't want to get too worked up over numbers posted at Lancaster, but he was exactly the sort of player we needed.

If any organization in the world should understand why it's a bad idea to sanguinely say, "Hey, it's just Tommy John!," it's ours.
 
Ideally Ruiz needs to add more power. Having never watched him I can't say if he'll for sure add it. I'm optimistic as he's showing respectable numbers at 20 but you don't know without really seeing his swing.

I do overall agree his early indicators are positive though for a major league contributor. It's rare to have a kid with his ability to work the zone totally fail in the majors.

Uh....what the heck?

Everyone would rather have gotten their top 2 prospects. The Braves also would have preferred that. The Padres weren't going to give us either one, let alone both.

It's been noted pretty much everywhere that the only reason we were even able to get someone of Fried's caliber is because he was injured. So we definitely weren't getting someone better and healthy. If Fried returns to his prior ability (pretty good chance of that), then he's a very good prospect, a top-50 guy.
 
Of course I, like everyone else, is not privy to what may or may have been on the table for Justin. What I do know is that Folty and Ruiz were on the table for Gattis, two of the Astros best prospects, and Miller (much better than any prospect) and Jenkins were on the table for Heyward. It seems odd that top prospects were offered for both Gattis and Heyward but not for Upton.
 
Fried is a top prospect, in the Folty range when healthy.

Gattis had 4 years left on his deal, that's why we got more for him.

And Shelby Miller was the Cardinals' #4 starter from their standpoint. That is less important for a team than a guy like Wisler is for the Padres' future. The Padres simply absolutely were not going to give away their top 2 prospects, after the other guys they had given up, and leave a guy having Tommy John as their best prospect. No team is ever going to trade their top 2 prospects for much of anything.

And Fried is a better prospect than Jenkins. The Upton return wasn't amazing, but it also wasn't garbage like some are trying to suggest. Fried, if he returns from the TJ, is a top-50 LHP. Jace Peterson is a pretty good prospect and should help right away. And both Dustin Peterson and Mallex Smith have high upsides, even if they're less likely to make it. If Mallex Smith hits in AA this year, his value will skyrocket. Dustin Peterson has a high ceiling, he's just really young.

There's a decent chance we end up with 2 solid major league players out of that deal.

Power hitting C\OF\1B with 4 years of control left in the AL on the cheap vs an almost All Star level LF under contract for one year.

So I guess you are one of the many on here that Hart and Co left a better offer for the one they took? In what world does that make sense?

You also throw the fact we got Fried, a LHP with considerable upside, out the window as filler? For reference here are Fried's rankings:

Fried is one of those rare prospects that every single person who talks about him mentions his immense upside. He has legit front line potential. But it obviously was a very risky and debatable move having him be the centerpiece in a trade for Justin Upton because of the injury.

I think Madison Bumgarner may disagree with that.

Hes got a lot of upside for sure, but top 20 may be a bit of a stretch. Most I've read say top 50 if he looks good this year.

I think he ends up being the best prospect we obtained.
