2015 June Draft Results Thread

Matt Withrow brother of Chris Withrow (current Brave). Another big kid and future reliever in all likelihood.

434. Texas Tech JR RHP Matt Withrow: 88-94 FB, 96 peak; average 81-84 SL; CU; 6-4, 235 pounds

2013: 8.38 K/9 | 5.43 BB/9 | 5.21 FIP | 58 IP
2014: 10.22 K/9 – 5.11 BB/9 – 36 IP – 5.59 ERA
2015: 10.23 K/9 – 4.50 BB/9 – 22 IP – 3.68 ERA

For those of you freaking out because the Braves dont draft BPA according to MLB.com's prospect rankings.

#12 Josh Naylor was ranked #61
#26 Taylor Ward was ranked #70
#32 Ke'Bryan Hayes was ranked #57
#38 Tyler Nevin was ranked #87
#46 Thomas Eshelman was ranked #126
#49 Antonio Santilian was ranked #100
#50 Brett Lilek was ranked #119

Do I need to keep goin?

So maybe the strategy is to go underslot as much as possible through round 10, and then spend the overage in the later rounds on several high upside HS players that would otherwise go to college? It's more of a "quantity" approach than a "quality" approach, but I can see the wisdom in that.

Could be, but I think the penalty is so high after Round 10 that you can probably only target a couple of guys. I think it's more likely they would try to draft Everett or Beck in Round 9 or 10.

I think those guys are as good as gone to college.

People should remember that all predraft talk by the Braves is that this draft is all about rebuilding the lower levels of the system. You have to do that with quantity.

So far our middle round drafting this year reminds me of what we did in 2008. We took five college pitchers from rounds 5 to 10 and three of them made the majors. Clemens, Oberholtzer and Hoover. That was a very good yield from that part of the draft.

Round 7 pick: Patrick Weigel, RHP from Houston

Reliever who transferred from Pacific, went Juco in 2014. Big dude (6-6) originally from Ventura, Calif., so was probably scouted at same time as earlier Cali guys.

In Juco struck out 84 in 61 IP,

287. Houston JR RHP Patrick Weigel: 90-95 FB with sink, 97-99 peak; 75-81 CB; 80-86 SL with plus upside; low-80s CU; iffy command; Pacific transfer; 6-6, 220 pounds

2013: 4.81 K/9 | 7.22 BB/9 | 3.91 FIP | 33.2 IP
2015: 7.94 K/9 – 3.53 BB/9 – 50 IP – 3.18 ERA
