2016 NFL Draft Discussion Thread

Drafts I loved:

Chicago, Minny, Cincy, Baltimore, Tenn, Cleveland, Miami, Washington, and Jax (Tampa would be on here if not for trading up for a kicker).

Drafts I hated:

Denver, NYJ, Dallas, Carolina, Atlanta, Detroit, Philly.

Hooper pick was probably my favorite and he could likely start mid season. The OG in the 6th was an awful selection from Atlanta. He wasn't even known by pundits. Probably easily a UDFA. Would rather have gone with a size speed prospect at WR for a long shot project).

I can get on board with Neal and Jones, as they likely aren't there when we pick next. Atlanta FO thought that the Las Vegas Raiders were trading up for Neal, and they felt most front offices had 1st round grades on him even if the pundits do not. They picked him based on his workout when he came in per Quinn. They were fully convinced he can cover after seeing him move around first hand. Thats a lot to lay out there if you are wrong IMO. What Neal does well though, we needed. This was a needs based draft in the biggest sense of the word and its not going to get rave reviews from anyone (although Rotoworld gave it a B-?) since we went ahead and reached 15 picks on both our first and second rounders. Both of those guys likely go before we picked again and not letting "your guy" get by you is really what counts.

I liked the Campbell pick. Dude has everything but the instincts for now. All the lead up to the draft shows how positive everyone is on him and then draft time gets here and they turn it around to say "the production wasn't there". He is still pretty raw at the position, but DQ should be able to handle that part. Everyone speaks to how smart he is... I say a good chance he turns out.

I think we likely get 4 starters from it eventually (I'm bullish at the growth of Jones, Neal, Hooper and Campbell) and that getting Fuller in the 7th likely lets us cut Hester saving some cheddar. That said, any draft that gets us 4 guys that will likely start\heavily contribute is pretty solid. It isn't what the pundits wanted from us, and likely going to get us knocked by most for jumping 15 spots ahead of where guys are supposed to go, but thats not really a huge deal 2-3 years from now. Its fun to grade NOW though.

I give our draft a C+ but if you really squint through the homer glasses it could be called a B-. We are so devoid of depth or talent at the LB\SS spots that I can see Neal, Jones, and Campbell playing heavy snaps 2 years into this draft. That makes 4 starters assuming Hooper is in there also. Tough to call a likely 4 player draft a bust.

I watched Campbell for three years up here in Minnesota. He scores an A+ on the eyeball test. Wore #26 and he looked like a huge safety out there a lot of the time. Extremely athletic. The guy just glides on the football field. The problem for him is that he glided in the wrong direction too often. One of the downsides to having great speed is that if you don't read the play right, you run yourself right out of it and that was one of Campbell's problems. I'm a Packer fan and Campbell reminds me of Nick Barnett in both the good and bad senses of his game. If he keeps the play in front of him, Campbell can run down most anyone. I realize that's true for everyone, but Campbell would get himself snarled in traffic a lot and that completely neutralized his game. Curious to see what the Falcons have planned for him. He may not be strong enough to be a consistent edge rusher and his coverage skills need to be bumped up a bit. But he's a great kid who earned his degree in business and was working on his human resources certificate program after he got his diploma and was academic all-conference. Hope he does well.

Antoine Williams was a monster this year for us. His UGA\GS game tape was damn impressive.

We played a ton of spread teams and he played the MLB spot backed up a few yards (Kinda shallow CF), which likely prevented the TFL numbers from being higher. Can run ok, 4.8? But is best at downhill thumping.

His successor for us is going to be better, but thats almost hard to believe. He was one of our best LBs to don the Blue\White.

Thanks - I know very little about the folks we got but it seems like we took some under the radar guys in the middle rounds.
 
I listened to nerdist podcast with the Jaguars owners son, who is big into analytics. I think its fascinating to see them rebuild that team heavily based on statistical analysis. (Browns doing it more now; Ravens are heavy into it) Jags identified deep passing as a under utilized aspect of offense and apparently decided to throw deep more often.

This team could take the biggest step up next year. Essentially added:

Malik Jackson

Dante Fowler

Myles Jack

Jalen Ramsey

Chris Ivory

With the continued development of Bortles and a better running game to go with Robinson/Hurns/Julius Thomas and a better pass rush (Fowler/Jackson); I wonder how close to .5000 they can get to this year.

No reason that defense isn't top tier. Should be strong on that end of the field and the passing game should be fairly legit again.

Per my GS coach folks, the field was a wreck (soaking wet) for the 40 times, so thats fairly low on the appropriate end of what he should run. He is built like a Mack Truck, and knows his stuff.

It's not a given that Jack even plays this year, and while he's an amazing athlete, he's very raw at LB.

But overall, they added a good amount of talent on the defensive side of the ball. AFC South could actually be interesting this year.

I think you are mistaken. Jack should be ready day 1 as his Meniscus tear is fine (which is relatively minor injury). He slide bc he admitted to teams that the knee could have some degenerative issues in the future and at some point he could require microfracture surgery. This was an admission on his own and the medicals on him had checked out. Jack will play day 1, it's down the road that is the concern. ANd he's a helluva LB; a certain top 5 talent in the draft.

I say he's done by 2019.
