2016 Postseason Thread

Are folks seriously arguing that using Allen for 1 inning last night after he had several days off (and another off day tomorrow) will somehow limit his effectiveness for tonight? As if a closer hasn't pitched 1 inning in back to back games dozens of times each season?

Francona has managed his BP this postseason about as optimally as a manager can do so. His BP usage is a major reason the Indians are in their current position despite being underdogs every step of the way, and without 2 of their best SPs.

If the Braves were in the WS with Kimbrel in the BP, I want him pitching the 9th whether the Braves were up by 1 or 10.

With a 6 run league, the average pitcher blows 1 in a 1000

Dang, Francona should have saved Miller and Allen to pitch last night in a game they had nearly zero chance to win after the first couple innings.

Case in point why the correct move was to nail down Game 1 when you know you're winning rather than save guys for Game 2.

Except I said it was the right move before the benefit of hindsight. So...yeah.

Yes, and the fact that you might not be winning Game 2 at all was exactly one of the reasons why it was a good move at the time. Again, in the playoffs, it's smart to look ahead to some degree (like shutting Kluber down a little early with a lead and a strong pen), but when the risk is minimal (Allen could absolutely pitch one inning every game of the WS without a problem), then it's smart to lock down a win when you have it in front of you.

That is the actual odds of it. Just dumb to throw a pitcher in game 1 to "break off rust" or whatever the logic is.

It's really not. You can keep saying it, but it doesn't make it true. What is the downside of him pitching Game 1? Because 'a closer pitching one inning after 5 days off could weaken him for the rest of the series' is no stronger an argument than knocking the rust off.

Why did Maddon pinch run for Soler at 3rd base with 2 outs? Waste of a bat if that's why he's in there.

I was thinking the same thing. The chance of Heyward's speed making any difference with two outs is miniscule at best. Of course, Heyward was likely heading in for defense at some point anyway, but it looks like both Francona and Maddon are going to push every possible button. Francona has no more bats left on the bench.

When you're behind you don't make defensive substitutions.
