So we’ll add basically zero impact talent to the organization this year by not signing Stewart and then our international limitations. Yikes.

Not signing Carter would suck big time. Either his physical sucks or AA is being cheap and is playing hardball which he may lose. As sucky as Coppy was he probably just gives in and signs him. Carter is a very good arm so I’d just up it to 4.5 million and be done with it. Get it done AA.

It's amusing to see everyone freaking out about not signing Carter, it's not like he is some generational talent we are missing out on if he doesn't sign. He was one of the better prospects in a draft class that was seen as lacking top end talent but being fairly deep with solid guys. He's a solid prospect and all, but we would get the #9 next year in a draft where we would have more flexibility to use the funds due to use having all of our picks (and the slot money that brings). It's not like this is some crushing loss if he doesn't sign, we lose very little (unless he turns into an Ace down the line of course, but equally as much chance the #9 pick next year does that as him).

I know people like to melt about everything on here, but the extreme melting here is kinda weird, particularly with the injury concerns.

The Braves would be picking in the late 20s next year - the 2019 draft order will be based on 2018's finish.

The #9 pick will be added as compensation if Stewart doesn't sign.

Others have said in the past that they're treated completely separately, and that savings from the draft or international signing budgets wouldn't be applied somewhere else like payroll. Never explained why though.

Do think that's an interesting question though. One would assume that the big brass was given a number from Liberty to spend on all operations, and that it was to be used at their discretion. So long as they didn't need to exceed that number (like when Medlen and Beachy blew out on back-to-back days and Santana needed to be signed), you would figure they could use the money however they saw fit. If AA's backed into $5 million they thought was going to be given to an 18 year old who decides not to take it, I'm not sure why he couldn't use it toward a rental to make a playoff push either.

He wouldn't be spending more than was in the initial budget in that situation, but apparently that's not at his discretion.

Yes but we have an enormous amount of payroll flexibility next year (only like 30 million committed) whereas this year we're apparently tapped out.

Well next year we will have a lot of money coming off the books to where we could easily budget that in if necessary.

Another negative of not signing Stewart -- It could impact our picks next season. Even though we would gain the #9 pick next season, we also are expecting to be active in the free agent market this coming offseason. If we sign a player who rejected a qualifying offer, we would be giving up our third-highest pick. If we have two first round picks next year, that means we'd be forfeiting our second rounder. If we sign Stewart now and only have one first rounder next year, we'd be forfeiting our third round pick.

If it's a legit injury that they found out post draft then I have no problem if he's signed or not. If it's just the Braves hard balling him then that's really crappy.
