I saw the quote as well, and it definitely gave hints that talks were ongoing. If Gohara was a principal part of the package for Shaw, that would fit the narrative. Got to think there was something else in the deal from our side, however (Didder?).

How comfortable would you be moving Camargo to short, sending Swanson down to get lots of ABs to figure stuff out, call up Ruiz and let he and Culberson platoon third the rest of the year?

Would that be a big dropoff from what we're doing now?

I tried to find the interview but couldn't come up with it.

My impression at the time was they got pretty close on an impact bat, but couldn't bring it home, but he had a good idea of what it would take now to land him and they might revisit it in the offseason.

With bowman then reporting they were heavy on realmuto, I've figured that was the most likely target but thats a guess.

I will say that he also discussed post-waivers trades and I think he responded to the question by saying a player would have to clear the entire AL and then the NL clubs before getting to him and he didn't think that was likely.

I sort of thought at the time that it perhaps indicated that he had been trying to get an AL player who he felt wasn't particularly likely to clear waivers. But I'm not sure that was a good impression to take and I've been trying to find full coverage of that interview and can't.

I think maybe I was watching the pre-game broadcast.

Defensively it would be a significant downgrade and you would HAVE to be super confident in Culberson's bat to make a move like that. I'm not that confident in his bat, although there is some room for hope with him. But even though I'd like to see Dansby get a chance to iron out some swing issues in AAA, I don't think we can afford to lose what he brings defensively. But I would have him working with Seitzer every single day to figure stuff out at the plate. He needs some changes to his mechanics and his approach. I don't think its too late for Swanson to turn things around offensively, but he has got to do some soul searching. Obviously what worked in college isn't working at this level, and he has to reinvent himself as a hitter. If he could even get to the point where he was a 100 wRC+ hitter, he would be very very valuable.

2018 HR/FB: 20.0%

The BABIP may be in the range of reasonable, but most likely unsustainable compared to his .314 career mark.

The HR/FB is a complete fluke, about 2x his career average...a career average buoyed by his unsustainable 2018 rate.

We should all be past the point of being fooled by these performances...right guys? Right??

They were only in 1st place with all predictive stats showing their win total was legit. Oh, they also had 4 NL all stars...the most in the NL.

Who could have possibly known they were contenders at that point??

The more accurate statement is probably, "they weren't ready to add a significant salary at that point". They still haven't added any real payroll to the 2018 ledger.

Phillies just got Bour, depending on price I might have hopped on him simply to block Miami from getting him. Says minor league pitcher, but I haven't seen the name yet.

Hopefully they can decide if they're contenders next year early in the off-season. I want them to sign Machado badly. He's a huge upgrade over Camargo and Swanson.

god, i wish, but i doubt it. think asdrubal will be their guy there. my guess is bour is a bench bat for them. he can't play anywhere but 1B, either can santana, and either can hoskins, really. but he's in LF anyway.
