2018 Trade Deadline ROSTERBATION

I'd wait until middle of June to make a big move or not.

But we need another high leverage bullpen arm, not sure whats available though.

right now we have Viz, Winkler, Minter, Carle and Freeman handling high leverage situations...it is a pretty good group...

it's looking like third is the bigger need...Beltre would be a good get imo...we would probably have to structure it so the Rangers would pay most of his remaining salary

You believe AA is going to keep Riley in AAA all year?

I think he is more likely to turn to the trade market to fill third than to give Riley an extended run there...the smart move with respect to Riley is to leave him in the minors and call him up next year after we have ensured the extra year of control

That's the most efficient move in terms of dollars saved over the long run. There may be more to it then that if the braves start to really over achieve.

it is smart both long term and for this year...Beltre would give us more in all likelihood

Why not get a combo deal.

Hamels and Beltre?

the upgrade from getting Beltre is clear...dont see it with Hamels

I agree on 3B, there's options out there: Machado, Moose, Beltre, Donaldson, some others.

SP i think is an underrated need unless Gohara or Allard replace McCarthy and go crazy.

I would offer the Rangers a choice of Fried, Sims or Wisler for Beltre

I wouldn't trade Fried for a rental. He has tremendous upside as a reliever and a good bit of upside still as a starter. I'm not against trading him. But surely a rental wouldn't cost its likely a buyers market with all the 3b options available.

Hamels is outpitching his FIP by about a run, mostly due to the bad hr-rate; but I think a move back to the NL, with a better defense behind him, would do him good and keep him in the 3.50-4.00 era range. To me, that’s valuable rotational stability, if the prospect cost is minimal (and it should be, given his salary). And his 2019 option won’t be vesting, so no worry there.

Of course, it’s unclear if the Braves can even afford his 2018 salary; and if Texas kicks cash in, the prospect price goes up.

I'm assuming we are going to ask the Rangers to pick up most of his remaining salary...and usually there is a contender's premium in these kind of deals...but maybe the supply of third base rentals will hold down the price

which of our current starters would he provide an upgrade over?

I'm legitimately floored sometimes at this board's toughness on Folty. You would think a guy that is on pace to improve his ERA by 1.5 runs and has a 10.1 K/9 would at least get a little benefit of the doubt. The dude has been good so far this season. He has improved in every basic metric except for BB/9.

(You understand my post was facetiously addressing this same point, I hope?)

Yeah I got it. I was agreeing with your underlying point. There have been legitimate calls for Folty to be replaced in the rotation. I can't begin to describe how insane that is lol

Padres cutting ties with Headley. Would he be worth a minor-league or split contract, if he’d accept a couple months minimum in Gwinnett?

Yea, it really does boggle. It’s insane enough that I felt the need to get explicit about my tongue’s relationship to my cheek, which I hate doing.
