Any professional sports GM can tear down a MLB roster to acquire young talent, or trade away a farm for win now pieces. It takes true talent to determine how much of the future to give away, and which parts to give away, to improve the club now without closing the window of contention early like the Cubs appear to be doing.

I think we have identified the areas of clear need that can be filled fairly cheaply (help in the BP vs LHers, and a 3B bat that hits RHers well) that can improve the team by 1-2 wins RoS without giving up too much future value. Those moves certainly won't turn the Braves into the Astros/Yankees/BoSox/Cubs, but that improvement will come as the young players mature naturally.

Hopefully AA has done the same exercise and drawn the same type of conclusions.

I think AA's comments regarding Camargo's exit velocity and power when hitting right handed are pretty good evidence that he'd like to find a left handed bat at third base for a platoon if it isn't too expensive.

We read into comments what we want to read sometimes.

Adding a win or two to the team is fine. It's a worthy exercise for a team to do even if just to demonstrate its good faith to the fans. Particularly if you give up nothing of value, which is what a lot of people are hoping.

But I don't think these kinds of things are going to make a huge impact really or win them a playoff series. Adding a 6 WAR bat, or a #1 starter? Certainly could swing a series or more depending on how hot they were.


But, At this point, the Braves don't even know how good their young players are.

Personally, I do think they are at least one nearly franchise level hitter and one #1 starter away from even mentioning themselves in the same breath as the best teams in baseball. Maybe they'll produce that internally, but it's not really a great bet they will.

so the question is do you wait and see how good you are internally before making your moves or do you go out and get the big pieces and then if you develop more you are reveling in your riches?

i don't know. I tend to think waiting is probably safer. You might make the playoffs this year anyway tossing away trash.

All those division crowns in a row and one World Series title to show for it is pretty sad. It doesn’t take a lot, but actually winning a series in the post season would be a welcome change. It’s been what 15 or 16 years since the Braves advanced in the playoffs. Not sure why fans gladly accept mediocrity and cling onto regular season success so much.

And when is that imaginary window supposed to be here? It’s been wait until next year for a few seasons now. Is it here now? You would think it would, but then you fall back on an excuse when the season ends earlier then what you were thinking.

I always said i thought 2019 was probably the first year to actually contend. After the Kemp trade, it was very evident that was the plan with AA also. I am pleasantly surprised we are good this year, but don’t think we could really beat the Astros. Any other years the Braves said they were trying to contend was just propaganda to sell tickets. I think most people on here knew that (I would hope).

We likely have a 90 win team this year with a clear payroll for next year. With the age of many of our prospects, our success this year and the amount of salary space....2019 is clearly the year.

Give me 20 years of relevance over what the Marlins did.

I don't get a ring if we win. I don't get a raise. My life doesn't materially change if we win the WS.

But I do get entertainment enjoyment out of watching a good team win games.

playoffs are a crap shoot...i like the intensity of playoff baseball but never thought it was as good a test as the regular season

A 162 season tests the strength of a team's 40 man roster.

The playoffs test the strength of a team's best 12-15 players.

Calling it a "crap shoot" is what teams do when they lose in the playoffs. I've never seen the winner chalk it up to luck...
 
Series can turn on luck. Two squibs and a blast can change the out come of a game. One bad play in the field by a very good fielder can change the out come of the game. One reliever having an off night can change the out come of a game. I think traditionally the better team wins in a series. But baseball is such a game of inches that luck has a big role in games too. They literally have stats that measure luck. No other sport has that.

Yeah...a ball hitting the chalk or not can completely change a series. You have to be good, but it sure doesn’t hurt to be lucky.

If Wolhers throws his fastball in the 8th and doesn’t give up the home run...we probably have another World Series win. That ONE pitch completely changed that series.

That ball BARELY went out. A few inches and Andrew makes a catch. Series probably over.

This whole "the playoffs are a crap shoot" cliche is silly.

Yes, there is a luck component to winning in the playoffs, but we all know the formula for increasing a team's odds of succeeding in the postseason. To claim otherwise is bordering on moronic.

Get 2-3 dominant SPs, 2-3 dominant BP arms, good defense, and as many impact hitters as possible...then hope those hitters don't get shut down by the other team's dominant pitchers.

Declaring something a "crap shoot" is what losers do. The winners talk about how awesome they are.
