2020 Offseason Thread

In all seriousness, i am curious what AA does in the 2020 offseason.

Julio has a team friendly option, does he move Ender, offer JD more than the QO. Does he finally dip in the farm system and trade more than filler for someone.

How far into the checkbook does he go in free agency.

Yeah I dont know where they plan to spend money. I have the Braves at roughly 80 million for next year with arbitration raises(assuming we keep Gausman and dont pick up Teheran's option). Mccann is probably an easy re-sign for 4-5 million. I have heard Will Smith has ties to the Georgia area so maybe he they will sign him. They were willing to give Kimbrel 3 years so there was/is willingness to spend for a closer. Smith probably gets 12-15 million. McCann/Smith would put the Braves around 100 million. I think they will look to sign a starter. Wheeler is probably the best bet but think we have an outside shot at Cole as the speculation I have seen puts him around 25 million per year.

I’ve seen no indication the Braves were willing to give any BP arm 3 years...

I’ve seen no indication they will be willing to give a SP 5+ years...

I’ve seen many indicators they will not sign any player with a QO attached...

There are very obvious constraints we can apply to help pinpoint likely FA targets.

Kimbrel wasnt offered a 2.5 year deal? I would be more than happy if we can continue to convince good players to take short term contracts but I find it unlikely. I have my doubts that Wheeler is going to get 5 years after his recent IL stint.

Swarzak isnt a junkballer. He was never going to put up a sub 1 ERA. Wheres the chef, I am not stoned enough to properly ridicule you for your opinion.

We need an everyday C, not a platoon. Getting little offensive production from catcher as of late. Big concern.

a real, FT catcher would be nice, as much as i overall like Flowers and Mac. Grandal of course continues to make sense at the right price and years. there isn't much tho.

Grandal has to be the priority this offseason. No QO offer will be attached, it makes so much sense.

Grandal was my #1 target last off season, and he remains pretty high this off season.

If that's the plan, then one of Flowers/Mac has to be retained as the backup. Flowers has a $6M option that must be decided on, probably before Grandal signs. My guess is it will be safe to decline the option and then circle back on Mac/Flowers if needed, but picking up the option and then pairing Flowers with Grandal and keeping Mac as Plan B is a pretty good plan.

Could the Braves afford Grandal, JD, and Keuchel?

Would probably have to part with Julio, Ender for some payroll flexibilty.

Probably, but I also wanted Brantley, which would have meant no DK. I didn't properly weigh in the potential of both Folty and Gausman being so ineffective for so long, nor did I correctly predict Wright being so terrible. The rotation was in complete shambles, and having the cash to sign DK was huge. That cash would not have been there had the Braves gotten Grandal/Brantley/Mous like I wanted.

It's hard to fault AA for anything he did this past off season other than not adding some BP help, but even that will be hard to criticize if he adds an arm in the next week and the Braves win the division. He knew there would be many BP arms available for small prospect returns (they are always available every year), so the panic to add expensive BP help before the season started probably wasn't justified.

AA is smarter than all of us, and it's great to be able to say that.

time to re-visit this after yesterday's season-ending loss.
really painful way to go out.
AA is an idiot for acquiring a terrible pitcher in Greene. and gave up next year's likely ROTY (Demeritte) to boot.
