2021 MLB Draft

New pipeline mock: https://www.mlb.com/news/mock-mlb-draft-2021-june-9?t=mlb-draft-coverage.

24. Braves: Michael McGreevy, RHP, UC Santa Barbara
It's mostly pitchers who are linked with the Braves -- Chandler, McGreevy, Mississippi State right-hander Will Bednar, Schwellenbach, Bush -- though Chandler and Schwellenbach are two-way guys whom Atlanta might deploy at shortstop.

That's a very Brave-like name. We'll probably draft him. And his nickname will be McDreamy.

I've completely given up on investing any time whatsoever researching draft options and forming an opinion.

I wanted Kyle Lewis, and was pretty upset at the Anderson pick. We will never know what Lewis could have been without the freak knee injury, but the Anderson pick turned out very well.

I was ecstatic about the Wright pick, but he has been nothing but disappointing since, and is well on the road to Bustville.

I had absolutely no idea who Harris was, and now he's the next big thing.

There's no point in spending effort on these guys because we are never right about any of them.

Watching ECU RHP Gavin Williams against Vandy right now. Really impressive. Touching 99, good offspeed stuff. He's gained a lot of momentum this season because he's throwing way more strikes. He could be another starter that comes off the board in the 24 range. I'd be really happy with him as the pick.

Then I read this:

grover
1:20 Is Michael McGreevy a 1st round lock?
Eric A Longenhagen
1:20 No way, the guy I saw last weekend was not a 1st rounder

Don't think that can only be directed at McGreevy - the same can likely be said of anyone not expected to go in the first 15-20 picks.

The draft is a crap shoot. So I don't pay a ton of attention to it.

I do watch the strategy (college vs HS, upside vs floor, top talent vs pool spreading).

And I do watch the long term results. So far AA's current team seems to be very model based and that is leading them to college guys like Shewmake. I'm not very excited about it, but I'm willing to see what happens.

I think part of the plan has been to supplement the farm with more college players who are more polished to fill the gap created by the loss of the international players. I think we'll see it cycle back towards HS players in the coming years as we get back into the international market.

But it's important to note that in 2019 we went over slot for several highly talented HS players later in the draft. I'm actually not opposed to this plan. Load up early in the draft with some high floor college guys that are easy signs, then go over slot later in the draft for some talented HS players.

I think you're right. The penalties on the international signings and the promotion of a lot of guys over the past few years has left a hole in the middle of the system. The funny thing is, of all the guys we lost due to the penalties, only one (Yefri del Rosario) is playing at the AA level (NW Arkansas in Royals' system). The rest are mired in High A and Low A.

Correction: INF Yenci Pena played 4 games early in May for the Rangers' AA team as a 20-year-old but has since been sent back to Rookie Level ball.

My favorites with any chance of being available for the Braves pick are Harry Ford, Andrew Painter, Joshua Baez. Not gonna get my hopes up. Fully prepared for us to take another utility player or college SP to bolster the AAA rotation for years to come.
