2022 MLB Draft Thread

I think the whole “frame to add velo” thing is something old school scouting holds onto. I think players with athletic, repeatable deliveries are just as likely to add velo if not more. There’s no guarantee anyone is going to add velo of course.

Agreed.

McCabe, David
UNC Charlotte (NC)
CAN
3B
S/R
4YR JR

6' 4" 230lbs
DOB:03/25/00

McCabe has produced at Charlotte, including hitting .386/.513/.784 with 16 homers and 40 walks in 42 games this year, but the pandemic and injuries have limited him to 96 games in three seasons, including just 65 in the field. A 6-foot-4, 235-pound switch-hitter whose power is his best tool, he's probably limited to first base in pro ball but has seen some brief action at the hot corner.

They saved 2.5m on the Rocker pick so they’ll be able to pay him.

Smart way to make their second pick equivalent to a second-round pick, even though they weren’t picking again until the fourth.

Prospects Live on McCabe: "McCabe is a big, strong-bodied corner infielder with the bat being the carrying tool. He's a slugger type, with far more power from the left side of the plate. McCabe has the athleticism to handle third base, if only below average for the position. He's a better fit at first base as a pro. Interestingly, McCabe makes his money punishing breaking balls rather than velocity, an inverse some evaluators are concerned about at the next level."

Both these past two picks seem like underslot savings selections, so that may the story of the day and reveal what we should expect of the bonuses doled out to our Day One picks.

Not sure how much on Burkhalter, but I'm guessing substantial savings with McCabe. Of course, if you read the bio of McCabe I posted, he is an accounting major so there will be no fooling him with numerical trickery.

Perfect Game writer on Alvarez: "RHH 3rd baseman who really performed at JUCO this spring, good hit tool projection with some untapped power in swing, has shown good athleticism/defensive actions in the IF."

Callis and Mayo had NO CLUE who he was…they didn’t even put up a graphic and we’re waiting on texts from scouts

Per Steve Fiorindo at The Pros Pipeline:

One of the better Juco Bats in So Cal... physical kid, with power....

I meant savings with Baldwin & McCabe.

I wouldn’t be surprised if, like you mentioned upthread, we don’t see the big savings we initially expected on Burkhalter.

Real small HS pitcher Seth Keller in the 6th

Prospects Live actually has him at #191 overall. Writeup: A smaller, twitchy middle infielder by trade, Keller has quietly developed into one of the more exciting prep pitching prospects available on day two in the draft. Keller has an explosive delivery with a bit of effort, but the athleticism is jaw-dropping and the arm is super quick. Up to 95, Keller primarily sits 90-93 and holds his velocity deep into outings. His fastball explodes at the plate with late hop and deception. He throws a firm, hard slider in the upper 70s with two plane break and plenty of sweep. He's shown feel for a change and a loopier curveball as well. If a team believes in the starter traits here moving forward, Keller could go as high as the third round.

And a tweet from one of their writers: A sneaky good get for the #Braves with Seth Keller. Really like the arm talent. Had him a Top 150 guy. Another quick arm guy with a fastball that pops. Feel for a slider and changeup. Kind of burst onto the scene this spring.

He's also an Old Dominion signee, so hopefully won't have to break the bank here.

Baseball America writer on Keller: Seth Keller set the @USABaseball NHSI strikeout record this spring with 16 whiffs. Smaller high school pitcher but is in the low 90s and up to 95. I like the split-change with 1,100-1,200 rpm spin.
