2022 MLB Draft Thread

Going through the Baseball America database. They have us as signed 19 picks already. Some interesting late round bonuses-

13th rounder Chipola RHP Cedric de Grandpre got $237,500.
19th rounder HS OF Christian Jackson got $125,000. Surprised he signed for that, but great news.

Only two remaining unsigned are 14th rounder Southern Miss RHP Landon Harper, 18th rounder HS OF Noah Williams, 20th rounder Cal SS Keyshawn Ogans.

If that number for de Grandpre is right, that leaves $14,880 - $132,440 each for Harper and Ogans zeros the pool out. Williams tweeted he was heading to school on the 19th.

I saw that on Williams, but it could just as easily be a negotiating ploy. Very strange to not have a commitment before the draft and then magically come up with one hours after a team picks you. The header on his Twitter page is also a Braves logo. I’m thinking there’s still a chance.

And Harper/Ogans don’t seem to be anything special that would cost more than the $125k.

Haven’t seen it reported elsewhere, but if the figure is correct, that’s the pool. I don’t think Harper or Ogans are going to require overslot, but I also don’t think ~$15k is going to be enough to sway Williams—though he could always surprise, as Jackson did.

Yeah - just figured it was worth taking the chance on Jackson since he was a local kid. Not sure there's a whole lot of reason for Williams to come all the way across the country - don't imagine there's much chance he grew up a Braves fan.

Sort of not surprised de Grandpré required ~7th-round money, given his age and reportedly strong uni commitment:

De Grandpre established himself as an ace pitcher for Chipola College, one of the best juco programs, yearly. De Grandpre made his way down to Chipola by way of Quebec and is committed to pitch at Arizona State in 2023. De Grandpre’s best trait might be his dependability and consistency. He’s 90-94 MPH in every outing with two quality secondary pitches and advanced command. De Grandpre is your classic sinker-slider righty who thrives on his ability to alter speeds and change eye levels to keep hitters off balance. He currently lacks a pitch that projects to miss bats in the pros; however, De Grandpre is lean and athletic, so physical growth could be on the horizon. De Grandpre projects well as a starter at either the D1 or professional level, and it will be interesting to see if there’s an uptick in his stuff during shorter appearances in the Draft League. He might be tough to sign away from his ASU commitment, but the starter traits and present stuff will entice scouts this summer.

Another RHP that fits the profile. Must’ve been fun for Anthopoulos to draft a fellow Quebecer.

The Williams pick does look pretty strange at this point if he doesn’t sign. If you’re going to use a late pick on a high school kid who may not sign, you’d think it would be a better prospect that you can give the money to if something doesn’t work out with an earlier pick - similar to what we did with Ty Evans last year.

But to take a lesser talent who doesn’t even end up signing? What’s the point - and how did they not have communication with him before the pick to know that?

It’s not a huge deal since it’s unlikely any of the more signable players in that range would make much of a difference, just seems really strange.

You're exactly the type of 4 year old I worry about giving that type of leverage to - thank God the Braves didn't allow you to be in that position.

I really thought that worrying the transaction cost for picking up DFAs would break the budget for the deadline was the peak of your dithering about nonsense to be honest.

The annual worry that whichever last guy the Braves announce signing will go completely rogue and hijack the entire draft is comparatively sane really.

Now it looks like most/all picks are going to sign, I’m very curious to see where the new blood gets slotted. FCL is the obvious choice for the prep guys, but Augusta could desperately use an infusion of talent, so I hope we see the JUCO picks there alongside the uni guys.

Would also be nice to see Shoemaker and Collins make an appearance in full season ball. So far, Smith-Shawver is lapping those to in non-Complex reps.

Ignacio Alvarez (5) is a very strong California junior college third baseman with above-average bat speed. He’s a bit stiff as a defender. Adam Maier (7) entered the season as a prospect with top-three-rounds potential, but got hurt early during the college season and basically missed the whole year. Jason Franks (8) from Cal Poly was a 90% fastball guy in college and gets a ton of in-zone whiffs despite sitting just 91-94 mph. It’s safe to assume there is some amount of trait-driven success happening here; he and Atlanta will need to find a second pitch. Keshawn Ogans (20) is a little shortstop from Cal who can really pick it and sprays oppo gap contact to right.

Pretty good draft roundup here with info like the above on every team from FG

Huh... so Baseball America reports that Noah Williams did in fact sign for $125k... can anyone verify? They show the only one unsigned is Landon Harper from Southern Miss

Noah Williams is at the Florida facility now... was motivated to sign apparently. Sounds like Harper will sign also. Looks like the Braves will sign every pick.
