2022 Trade Deadline

Forgive me if this has been mentioned, but Marlins writer Craig Mish wrote that we had conversations with the Marlins about a dealing centered around Ozuna and Avisail Garcia. He said talks didn't get very serious, but that's the first time I've seen mention of us trying to unload that contract.

Garcia is owed $12 million for each of the next three years.

Not a fan of that. THe roster space is valuable too.

I still think he has to have value to a team like the Brewers who forever need thump. He still hits the ball hard. THere isn't a vocal protest about him right now.

Pay like 8 million of next year's deal and send him to the Brewers. Brewers get him for 10 million then 18 million. That isn't bad and has upside.

I am confident that Ozuna is capable of being an above average bat. With that said, Garcia is respectable defensively and if there was no money switching hands, It’s much easier to swallow Garcia’s AAV. I suspect the Marlins were willing to do the swap if the Braves agreed to cover the cash flow difference.

Edit: Just realized Garcia runs an extra year through 2025. No thanks. Braves won’t be hurting for cash the next couple years.

yes, but to trade Happ in the offseason and not at the deadline would be epically dumb. Like Twitner level Dumb

Eh, the amount of value he loses in 3 months isn't likely to be much, unless he see stinks it up or gets hurt.

Contreras is the head scratcher since he is a FA at seasons end. Maybe they are working on an extension? I know both players have mentioned how much they want to stay in Chicago, so maybe the Cubs took that into consideration.

Interesting... for some reason in my head I thought Garcia was a bad defender too

Apparently it had other moving parts, including Anthony Bass. So it seems like we were trying to buy a reliever.

if he wants to stay and be the Cub's neck, then fine.. my point was if they trade him in the offseason versus now, then they are really really dumb. not only do you have to worry about injury/regression, but you are also losing that half year of control/buyer's premium/ and now going agasint other teams trading and FA players. There is nothing smart about waiting until the offseason to actually trade someone who is vaulable right now.

Just making the observation that "vocal protests" don't mean a thing. That incident was never going to be an issue for Braves bottom line whether it should have been or not.

Qualifying offer/draft pick.

Did I see something about the team with the ROY getting an extra draft pick?

If they were on the opening day roster… Im not entirely sure but they might also need to have been on multiple publications top 100 lists. It’s MLB, so it’s required to be needlessly complicated.

Need to be on 2 of 3 top 100 lists from mlb.com, espn, or baseball America.

So that rules out Strider. Also need to have a full year of service time. And since you get a full year of service if you win roy that may include harris but not 100% about that. You may have to have been on the opening day roster.

I think the winner also needed to have at least one mole on left ass check....

Did you see Will Smith gave up a run in his first outing with the Astros?

So far, he has 2IP, 1 ER, 1 H, 0BB, 1K

He was used in the 9th inning of a 6-0 game when he gave up the HR, and in the 7th inning of a 6-0 game the next day

The value of Happ right now is a guaranteed playoff run with him on board, plus another full season of control. I'd estimate half his trade value is tied up in this season when a team knows they are going to use him in the playoffs. That's the basis behind the inexact "contender's premium" (roughly 2x his current season's surplus value) we tack onto a player's surplus value when we are rough estimating trade value.
