2022 Trade Deadline

Let's be clear about exactly what happened with Iglesias..

The Angels signed him as a FA to a 4/58 deal about 9 months ago. This means of all team on the planet, the Angels were the only ones willing to give him $58M, which is an AAV of $14.5M. Then, the Angels used up the cheap $10M first season of the contract, and traded away the remaining 3/48, now an AAV of $16M. And they did it after his production has taken a turn for the worse. Oh and he's currently in his age 32 season.

So to recap: Nobody else was willing to give Iglesias more than 4/58 coming off a marvelous age 31 season, and then the Braves decided they wanted to give him 3/48 in the middle of a very mediocre age 32 season...and we are supposed to be overjoyed by that?

Sorry, I don't get it. This is a very mediocre trade for AA.

The contract is not for the FA iggy, but for the mid season 'we need him' iggy.. i.e. contenders premium for contract in a way. We have the money so absorbing a bad contract isn't a huge deal right now.. not if it nets us another title.

I can't disagree with this, which is what makes it an average "win now" move...or Grade C....average. AA had more cash than prospect capital to work with, and this was a reasonable way to spend it. Not great. Not good. Average.

When this guy is 35 and still taking up $16M of the payroll, we will see how happy folks are with this deal. My dislike for the Will Smith contract was very similar the moment it was signed, and everyone was willing to drive him out of Atlanta themselves after defending it for a while.

This.

Sorry Enscheff, but in the post directly before you complained about Iglesias you mentioned the premium that needs to be added for being able to use Happ in a current playoff run. Is there some reason HE is the only player that the premium applies to?

We get that you wanted Happ and don't like Iglesias, but you can't have it both ways.

Agreed. It very well may be bad at the end, but for the next two years it should be a pretty substantial upgrade over Smith for similar money.

Considering how long it's been that this type of contract would be a potential killer for the Braves, it's awfully nice to finally have Alex in a situation where he doesn't HAVE TO pinch every penny.

There a reason the Angels dumped this contract for almost nothing after using up the cheap first year. It is not valuable.

Again, we will see how everyone feels a couple years from now. They love it now because he’s the new shiny thing.

We'll just flip Iglesias for some random fifth-starter-type at that point, and start the carousel over again by picking up another buyer's-remorse reliever.

Value thing is relative.

A win to the Braves is worth way more than a win to the pirates.

Facts say we were the high payor on iglesias or else he’d be somewhere else. Data suggests 4 year deals for relievers are a bad idea. More of a bad idea if in mid 30s. More bad idea for 15 million plus.

That says our tool to get more valuable wins is money, not prospects. So risks must be taken.

I also agree with what aa is doing. He seems to be building this team with an eye for playoff baseball where power pen arms reign. Who cares if the guy should get paid 10 and we pay 16 if he’s good? Not your money. No salary cap.

We will complain. People were complaining about Riley’s performance in the Mets series on Twitter.

AA is a smart dude. If he thought getting Iglesias would keep him from getting somebody else or being competitive then Iglesias would not be here. We have the money and he saw last year in the playoffs how important the bullpen is. Matzek is a shell of last year and AA saw it and got the best arm available. I’m perfectly fine with it. We may hate the last year of the deal but he’ll help the club win games.

Really don’t understand why this is so difficult to grasp. We won the title last year thanks to a lockdown bullpen, and this move adds to that strength. It’s especially important when you can’t land a better offensive player than Grossman.

But maybe people just prefer watching McHugh throw 86 over the middle in the 8th or watching Minter/Lee throw their arms off every close game before we even get to September.

Iglesias was nasty last night. Hopefully this is a sign that he is pumped to be here and that added energy will help make our games 6 or 7 inning games.

Minter - 6th
Yates - 7th
Iglesias - 8th
Jansen - 9th

Lee, McHugh, Matzek mop up roles but can also plug into high leverage if one of the guys needs a rest.

Stephens would be odd man out.

No way Yates gets put in the 7th over Minter coming back from a second TJS. Minter has been one of the best relievers in all of baseball for well over a year. They are not gonna get rid of Stephens. He has no options and is very good. I imagine Lee would be sent down until rosters expand... or they may just use that spot to option Anderson for a bit. I can't believe they are just going to let Stephens go.

Maybe, matzek is lh, but matzek is worse than stephens in every way. Matzek is the one that should be gone imo

If you option Lee, you’re down to two lefties. It’s either going to be Stephens being DFA and hope he clears, Anderson being optioned or an injury that sorts it out for us.
