2023 Misc Braves Talk

I don’t think Eddie or Ozuna are going anywhere. Simply put they are adequate for their role (LH platoon OF, DH). There really isn’t an obvious upgrade in free agency, especially ones who will be on 1 year deals.

If I had to bet, AA is going to focus entirely on pitching this off season and run it back with one of the best lineups of all time.

Maybe try to upgrade over the Forrest Wall/Hilliard spot but agreed.

Maybe upgrade via trade. The current FA class isnt that great. You have David Peralta, Joc, Lourdes Gurriel (would require a long-term commitment), there is Bellinger as well but he likes playing CF and will cost a ton plus the Cubs will do everything they can to keep him.

Eddie for 9M is more than fine tbh for 1 more year. There's not a whole lot the following year other than Soto unless AA is saving money for him lol.

Eddie is not fine, especially at 9 million. He's terrible defensively and only a little average offensively. If he were the 5th OFer on a 5th OFer salary, then he would be fine. But we could probably sign Joc or Conforto for around the same price to provide the same offense while getting a player that can actually be useful defensively.

Real talk, we know Atlanta is going to make the playoffs and while the No. 1 seed is exceedingly likely, the No. 2 is at least wrapped.

Who are you most worried about facing in the NL and the AL, if we make it that far, of course?

For the NL, I’ll go with the Brewers. I think they have the pitching depth to at least slow the Braves down. The Phillies are probably my No. 2 because they’re confident against anyone. I just don’t think their rotation is good enough with Nola and Walker being so underwhelming this season. The Urias news lessens the Dodgers even more for me - that rotation is hot garbage.

For the AL, the Rangers terrify me. They’re scuffling something fierce right now, but the lineup can keep up with the Braves and they have some talent in the rotation and bullpen. Houston is the obvious No. 2.

I think you understate the value of an average hitter. Eddie’s been worth is contract and then some this year.

If Joc or Conforto want to sign for 1 year 9 million, then sure. Why not? But that’s probably not realistic.

And for what it’s worth, Eddie has been a better defensive outfielder than Joc or Conforto across DRS, UZR, and OOA, so not sure they are able to cash the check you are writing for them.

I feel like Alec Bohm is constantly doing something well, but then I look at stat pages and underlying peripherals and realize he’s very average, and that’s being generous. Crazy.

No one. The Braves should be the team every other team fears.

For me it’s the Phillies and Seattle. They’ve got pitching for days and an interesting team. They don’t make enough contact but lots of players who can hurt you. Murphy lite (Raleigh) behind the plate and Acuña lite (JRod) in CF.

After having spent quiet a bit of time living in Seattle for work (Gov, you know this firsthand!), if the Braves didn't win it all this year, I would love to see the Mariners win it.

I'm supposed to go back up there for two weeks in October again for work, so perhaps I can attend a playoff game while I'm there in between the hikes!

Would be cool catch up with you if you happen to come this way.

I don't under-estimate it at all. But it doesn't have any value when the player is a terrible defender, like Rosario is. That isn't worth 9 million.

And no I don't think Eddie has been worth his contract and then some. He's been worth .6 bWAR this year.

Where did this idea come from that the Phallies have good starting pitching?

They have Wheeler who is a legit Ace but no one else in their rotation has a FIP below 4.

The only thing interesting about the Phallies is that Trea Turner no longer looks like the worst contract in the majors and I'm sure he'll go back to being a pain in our ass like he always seemed to be when he was with the Nats.

Per Fangraphs, he’s been worth $9.7M. So maybe 1.1 or a little more if he has a hot streak. If that’s our biggest problem, we are definitely within the range of first world problems.

I didn’t mean the Phillies had pitching for days, I meant Seattle, who have four starters with a sub 4.00 FIP and an airtight bullpen. Sorry, wandering antecedent.

The Phillies have pitching that owns us once every fifth day.
