I think State probably nailed it saying I am probably making more of this than needs to be. I actually didn't mean for a blow up on this.. just that when you see a tweet that says Braves are running out of arms and the team litterally threw Dodd, then Winas (who I actually like) and potentially a BP game with AJSS in 3 days.. it looks like another scrap heap pitcher might not have been a bad idea. Not for the playoffs, or to win the division, but to not tax the pen and make sure the team is fully healthy going into Oct. I suppose when they clinch #1 seed with a week to go, you might see some "IL" in the pen and starting rotation.
Pure stupidity. Lorenzen started 18 games last year as well.
Actually, this is exactly what I wrote (bold added):
and...
and...
Let me quote it again so you can read it verrrrry slowly: "he can start a playoff game or move to the BP in the event all of Strider/Fried/Wright/Morton are in top form in October."
Now Morton got rested, while Lorenzen got run into the ground. Had Lorenzen not been run into the ground, he probably wouldn't have been better than the .304 xwOBA Morton has posted since the deadline. So then, at that point, he would move behind Morton because he was in top form....which I will quote again:
"he can start a playoff game or move to the BP in the event all of Strider/Fried/Wright/Morton are in top form in October."
Can you understand the qualifying statement "if they are in top form"? Do you know what a "qualifying statement" is? Do you need a few minutes to look it up? Shall I post a link?
Elder and his .342 xwOBA in the same timeframe would likely have been bested by an uncooked Lorenzen, so I still think he would have pitched in the playoffs over him. Wright is still TBD, but we haven't seen him yet and time is quickly running out.
Seriously, this is written at about a 4th grade reading level. Please take your time, read it slowly, and try to follow it.
I already covered in detail what I actually said about Lorenzen in the post immediately above this. At this point if folks choose to not understand the argument there's not really much more to discuss. The benefit of hindsight now knowing what Morton has done lately doesn't change the decision making process 6 weeks ago...no matter how much derp you want to inject into the discussion.
Ronald now walking more than striking out. Not exactly sure when the percentages flipped but flipped they have

You would be excited about 7 years of Trout and his list of injuries?
Trout once someone can convince him to get off CF will be fine. He can't play CF anymore but a LF/DH hybrid will do him good. He's not like Andruw or Griffey who's knees/back were so shot their offense was effected, like he broke a bone in his hand this year. THat's not that concerning. Sure his back and calf injuries raise some questions, but he came back strong from them.
I'm not bullish on Trout being any more injury prone than a player in their 30s is.

Imagine not signing Olson to that extension. What kind of contract would he be looking at in the offseason?
I’ll tell you what. Now that it looks like Ohtani might not pitch again, I could see the argument for signing Olson over Ohtani.

I'm wondering what kind of contract he will get. I'd put a huge innings based incentive into his deal. If he doesn't/can't pitch it would be top dollar for a slugger. If he can pitch that incentive kicks in for top level pitching.
I think this is exactly what will happen. The deal will be reported as $500m but a good percentage of that will be tied up in incentives.
Ohtani was actually a great OF in Japan with, obviously, a big time arm out there, but has never played the position in MLB. I wonder if he would go back to playing OF if he can't pitch anymore?
