2023 MLB Draft Thread

Normally I get best in class draft analysis from y’all on day 2 and 3 of the draft. It’s been a little quiet here today. I guess this means we had a good draft then?

Waldrep is now the pitcher I am most excited to see statcast data. That split looks filthy, and the breaking ball is a downer like AJSS.

I imagine the worst case scenario is AJSS plus a killer split who struggles with command. Best case is approximately peak Wright if he "learns how to pitch".

Just sign me up for the camp who doesn’t want a player like Show hey. Not because of talent. He is incredibly talented. I just hate contracts that take 20% of total payroll. The Angels had two of the best players in the game and still mediocre. Baseball is the one sport that one or two players move the needle very little. You have to have a complete team.

Well we can’t draft him so why are you here

Braves have so many players on team friendly deals. We could afford Shohei, but no way AA is giving him 10-12 years.

Was pretty surprised to see that Kiley McDaniel actually has Hackenburg 86th overall in his rankings. The writeup certainly doesn't sound like one for the 86th ranked prospect though.

86. Drue Hackenberg (21.3), RHP, Virginia Tech

Exactly the kind of "boring" (solid-average stuff, durable workhorse) major conference starter that goes in the back of the second or third round. Depending on your sport, you'll find it more interesting that he's the brother of Adam (baseball), Brandon (soccer) and Christian (football).

so could be another Bryce Elder.

Guess I'll post it then. Via SI:

Round 8, Pick 249 - Cory Wall, RHP, William & Mary

Graduate transfer from Fordham where he pitched in 27 games and had a career ERA of 4.81 with five wins. He led Fordham to the A-10 Championship in 2019. Wall had a solid year for the Tribe last season as he had a 3.98 ERA over 52 innings. He had a 3-5 record and he struck out 63 and walked 11 batters.

Round 9, Pick 279 - Riley Gowens, RHP, Illinois

Deemed "A data darling" by MLB Network's Jim Callis. Big time fastball guy that works out of the stretch. Curveball is solid as well. He works out of the stretch a lot and will likely be a reliever at the next level. His ERA isn't the best in the world, but his strikeout-to-walk ratio is pretty nice. He struck out 75 hitters while only walking 16 in 60 innings of work.
