2023 MLB Draft Thread

I will think they will take a college pitcher first until the end of time, or until I see otherwise.

That just seems to be the plan. College pitching early and then position guys later. Lots of college pitcher senior signs.

I'm curious to see if, and how much, there will be in terms of slot variation. The extra pick falls well below the pick they got in trade from the Royals last year to draft Ritchie, but they may take a flyer at #70 or #94. That's also been a bit of a pattern.

Just checked over at Perfect Game/Crosschecker and they have posted a free first round mock. They have the Braves picking Oklahoma State RHP Juaron Watts-Brown who is listed at #67 in the mlb.com rankings. Reading his scouting report, it sounds as though he's more a pitchability guy than someone with a big fastball. Lead the Big 12 in strikeouts with 124 in 84.1 IP (13.6 K/9).

He’s got something nasty to k that many

Obviously I support drafting Waldrep, as it would make me look very smart for bringing him up earlier in this thread.

I guess when it stops working we can't bitch too much... They have pretty much home grown talent all over the field.

Agree.

We can fight about who gets credit for what player. And we do...

But even under AA only there have been some big wins drafting. I was not excited about the 2020 all college, almost all pitcher draft. Looks great now.

agree, if you start to pick apart aspects or certain picks, you will find a lot of duds.. but when you step back and say well we got Harris/Grissom/Elder/Strider/ Lango (used for Olson)... am I missing anyone

Keith Law made multiple updates to his mock overnight and now has Colin Houck to us. Would definitely be exciting, but also wouldn’t be our pattern of underslot that we’ve seen in recent years.

Atlanta – Colin Houck, SS, Parkview High (Lilburn, Ga.)

UPDATE: I said early Friday that Houck might be sliding. This seems awfully far for him to slide, but once he’s getting close to Atlanta’s pick, knowing their history of grabbing many of the best players in their backyard, maybe it’s not that unreasonable to think it would try to work him all the way to No. 25.

Seems like the college talents are drifting up pushing prep players back to where we pick and the supplemental round

I wonder what his ask would be in terms of bonus and whether $3.3 million lands him given where he's been ranked. You're absolutely right that drafting him would be a bit of a departure from the pattern they've used in the previous few drafts.

We certainly don’t have the biggest draft pool money this year or anything - I think we have the 21st largest pool because of the comp pick for Dansby leaving - but we’ll probably have the smallest pool in next year’s draft. Obviously that could change pending free agent movement, but with one of the best records in the sport this year and zero comp picks coming, we’re going to have a very small amount to spend next year.

Maybe trade for a pick next year? We are positioned to sign one of the top international guys in 24 if memory serves though.

Baseball America sticking with Lombard at 24.

“Both George Lombard Jr. and Walker Martin are getting serious buzz at picks 24 and 25. Given the consistent Lombard Jr. connection with Atlanta I will stick with it here. The Braves like exit velocity, so power-hitting college third basemen like Yohandy Morales and Brock Wilken are intriguing options here and are the best college bats available if the Braves want to go that route.”

Keith Law still has Houck as the pick. The MLB Pipeline guys have Bryce Eldridge and Walker Martin.

Looks like Kiley McDaniel’s final mock is the only one missing. Interesting to see all these connections to us and high schoolers though. I’m skeptical about that.

I obviously have no way of knowing, but Eldridge just seems like a Braves' pick to me. They've had a lot of luck figuring out how to discern the strongest part of a two-way player's game and getting the most of it.

I wonder if Wilken could play LF? His bat would play well anywhere and we don’t have a need for 3b anytime soon.
