2023 MLB Draft Thread

From Twitter - 2023 Stuff+ on Waldrep’s pitches:

Fastball (94-97, T99) - 144 (44% above league average)
Splitter - 129 (63.4% whiff rate)
Slider - 130
Curveball - 135

I’ll say that the splitter being his lowest pitch on Stuff+ absolutely doesn’t match the eye test, but this just shows the full arsenal. There is so much to work with here.

Worst case, he flames out as a SP, and we move him to the pen. Best case? We got an ace.

Same **** as ajss

It is a low spin rate so stats don’t like it. Low spin rates have more movement than high spin rates . Problem is it it way harder to command

Man Waldrep is a huge get. The more video I watch the more I like him. This dude could be an absolute beast.

I mean he has 3 potentially plus pitches. That doesn’t sound like a reliever to me.

Great stuff but struggles with consistently throwing strikes. I have read he has a good but of effort in his delivery. I think the Braves will try and change his delivery a little and maybe even get him to dial it back a little. He can have 20 plus pitches but what matters is how many plus pitches he can effectively throw for strikes. I think at some point they might have him focus solely on his fastball and splitter for 95% of his pitches pitching out of the pen.

Man they are booing Manfred off the stage bwahahaha!!

His last pick combined with the hated Astros being the pick? It was awesome.

He was clearly agitated as he stopped his speech two or three different times. He needs to lean into it like Goodell. It's all in good fun.

We don’t know nearly enough about him to actually analyze him. I’ll say again that Strider didn’t project as a future ace. He’s the 1% outcome but still.

From Grant McCauley- #Braves assistant director of amateur scouting Ronit Shah said they've had an eye on Hurston Waldrep since his HS days --- he went undrafted in the 5-round 2020 draft. Shah raved about he splitter among the 4-pitch mix for Waldrep.

Another high school SS from Georgia just went and it’s not Houck. He probably wants top 10 money or he’s hurt.

He is a college pitcher, we know more about him than we know about the HS players we took last year. I could make comparisons all day long to disregard analysis of any player as being to early. Millwood sucked in the minors. Venters was never even a top prospect. Pujols was like a 10th round pick. Glavine was successful without throwing hard. Theres 20 teams ahead of us that didnt have strong confidence in Waldrep being a top starter enough to take him. Its not uncommon for pitchers to project as either a top of the rotation starter or a closer. Especially those with control issues that are caused by non ideal deliveries. I dont want to knock the guy. I like the pick.
