2023 MLB Draft Thread

It’s predictable that we went college pitcher early. We probably do it with 2 of the first 3 picks. I’m hungry for some bats to follow too, but they’ve been right.

The thing I like is that this guy isn’t someone who had a velocity bump late. He’s got stuff no doubt. Has a special pitch but is not a junk baller.

He’ll be fun to follow

Where the Fck are they going to play him with having Lindor locked up until he's 50.!? 2B I suppose. Houck is a legit defensive prospect at SS

They just signed McNeil to an extension and have Baty at 3B. Interesting pick though, for sure. Trade bait in a few years?

Houck as a HS prospect is like 5 years away from the majors. With the Mets Lindor will probably be an albatross by then.

I don't know if there is a master blueprint, but with the offensive core signed for the next 5-8 years, I think they are hoping that their international signings and some of their guys in the lower minors come along at a reasonable pace. They are going to have to make decisions on pitching sooner so they may be concentrating on that end of the equation in the short term.

His last pick combined with the hated Astros being the pick? It was awesome.

He was clearly agitated as he stopped his speech two or three different times. He needs to lean into it like Goodell. It's all in good fun.

David Stern used to bask in the boos. He was like a science fiction villain who drew strength from negative energy.

You can tell Goodell doesn't actually like the boos, but he at least understands he has to pretend to enjoy them. Manfred is so clueless and/or apathetic that he doesn't even bother.

Great stuff but struggles with consistently throwing strikes. I have read he has a good but of effort in his delivery. I think the Braves will try and change his delivery a little and maybe even get him to dial it back a little. He can have 20 plus pitches but what matters is how many plus pitches he can effectively throw for strikes. I think at some point they might have him focus solely on his fastball and splitter for 95% of his pitches pitching out of the pen.

Strider had a tough time throwing strikes consistently too in college

Goodell is desperate to be liked. He says what he has to because if he lets people know it bothers him they will do it more. Goodell should be banned from the NFL for life for his role in covering up the CTE research.

There a lot of pitchers taken who have a tough time throwing strikes consistently. Most never refine it enough to fulfill their potential. Theres less than 100 good MLB starters in total. I hope for the best and I trust in the Braves development staff but the likely scenario is a high end reliever. With the Braves contention window there will likely be pressure to push him if he can help out of the pen rather than give him several years to develop as a starter. If he was on the Royals then he would likely get far time to develop as a starter. But let me be clear, I dont think Waldrep developing into a high end reliever is a bad scenario.
