No, that’s a poor reading of my point. I don’t give a flying **** how Kamala acts or how she views her race. Even if it’s a political grift, it’s her grift to run. But it’s not like she just popped up 4 years ago with a black descendent. She’s immersed herself in “black” culture (I don’t mean to suggest I get to determine what this) as far back as undergrad, and presumably earlier given the choice of Howard to begin with. She doesn’t have to pick which part of her she is, because she’s it. If she relates more to her Indian heritage, it doesn’t invalidate her blackness.
Again, I’m really not outraged here. This doesn’t change anything I think about Donald Trump, and I don’t think he meant it maliciously. Feels similar to the Biden “you’re not black” gaffe from four years ago which was also overblown. Old white dudes often have trouble relating to young black people authentically. This is fairly benign compared to other statements made by Democrats and Republicans alike. But I just don’t accept that Harris needs to fit a box to be black.
