One thang about Springfield has gotten lost in the discussion. It is a city that has been hemorrhaging population since the 1960s. Young and ambitious people leaving. The old being left behind. An influx of immigrants offers an opportunity for renewal. Immigrants bring energy and entrepreneurship. Sure there are strains on the educational system and housing in the short run. And as the mayor there has noted, they could use some help from the state and federal governments. Such help could, for example, rehabilitate some of the boarded-up housing that is a feature of towns like Springfield. Long-term this surge of immigration will be a very good thang for Springfield.
Springfield population:
1960 82,723
1970 81,926
1980 72,563
1990 70,498
2000 65,358
2010 60,608
2020 58,662
2023 58,082
It has been in decline for a long time. This might be their best chance to turn thangs around.
It has happened elsewhere. For example, Jersey City in New Jersey saw its population plummet by a third from 1930 to 1980, but has been revitalized by a surge in immigration since then. It is now a very vibrant and very diverse city. Not without its problems, but in far better shape than when it was hemorrhaging population.
