2024 MLB Draft

Love the pick. Absolutely a great get. I think those down on Waldrep should pump the brakes. He's got so much to work on..but he's a talent. Perhaps now is the perfect time to trade from a position of "strength?" Or weed out all the AAAA pitchers in the system.

I think it's too early to move him, but it also depends what's coming back and how much control is as well.

I am personally not buying his stock I guess. I would try and move him before he deflates even more. I am just not seeing enough from his statcast data to get me excited. Especially with his poor command of his best and only pitch.

I get that the MLB wants to create intrigue and excitement in the MLB draft to match the popularity of the NFL and NBA drafts. But the MLB draft is a completely different animal. You're likely never going to see 90% of these prospects play at the major league level, which makes it hard to create attachments to these picks. Not only that, but you can't trade picks. For those reasons, I can't fathom why you only have 2 rounds in day 1 of the draft and why there are like 10 minutes between picks. Shorten the draft time to 1 minute per pick and show 3-4 rounds day 1.

While Holton lacks the projection you'd like to see from an amateur prospect, he makes up for it with his pure stuff. Holton did miss some time with an injury this spring, but he's been a consistent performer at Vanderbilt and should slot in as their Friday night arm in 2024. It's a deceptive delivery, hiding the ball very well and there's some angle created to home plate. The heater jumps out of the hand and has sat in the low-to-mid 90s, reaching 98 MPH at times, showcasing some late life and he does a good job of commanding the pitch well. His best off-speed pitch is a 12-6 curveball in the upper-70s/low-80s with sharp break and depth, complementing it with a firmer slider and a change-up that lacks usage. The biggest thing to work on with Holton is the command of his off-speed arsenal, as he has shown some struggles to consistently land them for strikes.

That's reasonable and understandable. But I've said numerous times that unless they alter his fb to be more than a get over pitch it would be difficult to envision TOR projection for him. That said, Waldrep if he can be serviceable enough to threaten the zone, is less hittable...I don't think the data is the end all on that while acknowledging the uphill climb. I do agree, if you can get the most..do it.

The problem with the MLB draft and the other major drafts compared to the NFL draft is that fans have probably watched NFL draftees as college players so they are more aware of them and because of that can become more invested in who their favorite team chooses (or doesn't choose). Draftees in other sports usually don't have that level of familiarity so fans just have to trust the scouts unless they are basically obsessed with finding out more about potential draftees. I used to subscribe to PG Crosschecker and Baseball America to assess possible draftees. It never got to the point of obsession, but I spent a lot of time on it. It's just so time-consuming and I realized I was still in the dark a vast majority of the time.

The NBA draft has really gone south because very few fans have watched any of the foreign players being drafted.

Before the MLB draft was televised, a fan could listen to the audio feed and it was rapid fire after the first couple of rounds. It was about ten seconds between picks.

Holton looks interesting.

Caminiti is a home run pick. Also would have been very happy with Mayfield. I don't know what they were thinking with Holton. Possibly an underslot deal to save money and they think he can be a good reliever?

The NBA draft, while far below the NFL draft in ratings, still exceeds MLB draft ratings by about 4-5 times. I think most casual basketball fans watch March Madness and follow sports enough to know the main prospects in the upcoming draft. Not only that, but they generally see their teams' draft picks play in the summer league and at least sparingly during their rookie season. So you can make those attachments a lot easier.

Not many baseball fans follow college baseball. And only a fraction of a percent of baseball fans follow high school baseball enough to know who the top prospects are likely to be 6 months to a year from now. Add to that, MLB prospects rarely make the majors and minor league games largely aren't televised. Unless you live nearby your favorite teams minor league affiliate, the only way to really follow these draft picks is looking up their game logs on google.

But getting back to my point, given all this information, it seems silly to drag out the first round like they do. I get that you want to highlight each teams pick and do a quick synopsis for the fans, but they are just dragging it out too long.

I like the Tenn OF Kavares Tears.. or at least the way they wrote him up. I like good bat speed guys with speed and power. said his swing is flat (which is easier to fix) and started to make better swing decisions.

Not a fan of drafting for need, but that also can potentially fill a spot that is in great demand in our system. Even be a Acuna replacement as he transitions to DH when Ozuna is gone.

Haven't watched much of any of these guys, but can Jordan play in the field? Looks like a power prospect, but his K numbers kind of put me off a bit. Like Matt, I like what I have read about Sears. I wrote last week that I hope they find a college outfielder on Day 2. Maybe not someone who screams prospect, but a solid player who can find his way to AA next year.

PS--My guess is they will have to go under slot on a few of the picks, because I think Caminiti will require a bonus amount above slot.

Corner OF. He played CF this season some, but he won't stick there
