2024 MLB Draft

That end of the equation is not going that well at this point. Young guys and it's a steep learning curve for teenagers, so it's too early to tell on a lot of guys. I think is where the elimination of the Short-Season A Leagues (Braves had an Appalachian League team) has really stunted the development of a lot of guys.

They are definitely projects bc of the age and learning curves. The more $hit you throw against the wall some of it is bound to stick. We won’t know on the international guys for a couple more years.

Curious to see how the next ten rounds go. Depending upon how much of the pool they have saved, I wouldn't be surprised if they selected a high school prospect with a bonus demand that scared off teams in the first ten rounds. Braves have done that with some regularity during both the Coppolella and Anthopoulos regimes and if they have zeroed in a guy they think they can sign within reason, they may go that way again.

It’s been discussed many times that the drafts will focus on pitching due to the high attrition rate and the fact we’re set at the major league level. We have 4 SS and 3 CF in the system we’re going to give playing time to in the lower levels. Drafting Corner OF or Corner IF doesn’t make sense.

After a first half where we have to get scrap heap positional players to play, I can totally understand Matt's angst at our drafting strategy.

On the extremely limited research I have done on the players remaining, Rustan Rigdon is a guy I like a lot out of Metter, GA. Could have gone a lot higher if not for injuries. I also like Owen Paino out of NY.

Lot of HS talent left, if we can snag them for moderate bonuses.

The college group wasn't very deep this year.

I don't even care if they draft pitchers or hitters really... I would like hitters... but to waste the 4th round pick on someone who would still be available today and could be had for 100K is pure lunacy. there is plenty of savings in rounds 5-10 as it is. If the #1 pick is going to be that over slot then I do question that pick as well.. but I really don't think it will be much if any over slot. That 4th round is 5/10 with a 6+ era... they could have drafted my son who has never played baseball and been just as effective. I also understand that there is opportunity to grab HS players and sign them overslot with the savings.. but again, there is already savings there... or better yet grab a slot value at 4 and punt 5 and 6 picks.. secondly, what 10+ round pick have the Braves drafted that has actually worked out? I honestly don't know, but it seems they do it every year and unless I am forgetting someone, it doesn't work...even when they are 'hard to sign preps'

I think the braves scouts deserve a little benefit of the doubt when it comes to pitching.

AA deserves the benefit of the doubt too.. but when he traded an up and coming star catcher for a guy who hates hot weather, I called him out on that too... People who do a good job are not immune to critique... when I screw up, I deserve the grief I get.. I am also one of the first to call myself out on my own bs.

Based on the state of the farm, I think it's fair to criticize the AA regime for their drafting strategy.

Being the #23 ranked farm and blaming it on "drafting late" doesn't hold much water when teams like the Dodgers and Yankees are #3 and #6. Of all the things AA does well, drafting isn't at the top of that list. I would rate this FO as very mediocre in the amateur acquisition department.

And no, we shouldn't just "give the scouts the benefit of the doubt". Look outside the bubble, and resist the urge for homer group think. That's exactly how the "Nacho is a SS" narrative gains traction.

But for the record, I do really like the Cam pick as it stands today. Actually thought first 3 rounds were not bad. But at 4 there were some really intriguing hitters available that could have really punctuated the draft..

No 1B of note anywhere in the system. Limited at 3B in the system. Two big-buck INF (Tavarez and Benitez) has scuffled mightily. Big-buck CF Glod likewise. Best performances from international players to this point are Guanipa, J. Garcia, and Gil and they are all in the FCL. Perdomo yet to perform and that should provide some excitement. On top of that, competition isn't a bad thing. I can't think many "plus" position player prospects in Mississippi, Rome, or Augusta. Maybe Ceballos and maybe McCabe in Rome and maybe Drake in Augusta. The system is really hollow right now.

I don't know if I would ever draft a true 1B.. I guess there would be some scenario (FF type player), but usually 1B is a pretty easy position to fill with free agents or trade or even some DH level players.
