2025-2026 offseason thread

Terry McGuirk keeps saying how much money they're bringing in, so I damn sure hope these fuckers have a ton to work with.
The number floating around is they could have around 100 million to spend. If Murphy were traded for a prospect and half of Profars contract was ate we'd have close to 125 million to spend. More of Bummer could be traded. They could no doubt load the team up to be the best in baseball.

it's just hard to picture the Braves being the high bid on a long term contract for the top free agent.

I'm not sure that's ever happened with a position player.

All evidence is that AA might price enforce with free agents but won't overpay for decline years.

And that's why he'd lose. You can't win every deal. You win on the front and middle years and lose basically on the back end like all contracts pretty much. If AA isn't willing to do that to extend the window for 5 more years then remove him from office. I'm sick of trading all of our talent just to sign the guy we trade for to a similar deal that we should have given out in the first place and saved the prospects. Just spend the damn money for once.

But the extensions have generally been for slightly less money than anticipated market and do not extend as far into projected decline years.

It should work out better for team, but you can't really control who gets hurt and who doesn't play well.

I liked Riley's the least because he seems the most likely to fall apart early. But together the contracts really locked the Braves into a roster and they kind of have to have them play well.

They've maybe got one handcuff off ... not sure putting it right back on is the best idea, but it's the only way you are likely to add a star when your farm is hand to mouth.

Yeah I just dont see us being the high bidder for the top free agents either. Anything that goes far beyond 3 years makes it less likely we can/will resign Acuna. I think we need to just accept a new long term extension for Acuna is not in the teams best interest and make the best of the 2-3 years we have left. Acuna is too injury prone at a young age to invest so much money in his 30's.

I think it would be wise to use the luxury cap as a sort of soft cap. If we go beyond that to start the season I doubt it will be by much. They view every deal in terms of whether its worth the cost so everything over the ap we pay like a 50% tax so if we are signing someone for 10 million that is all over the cap spending we are really paying 15 million for that player. I think most over the cap spending will come from inseason acquisitions. We have about 96 million to go under the luxury cap with 25 million for options for Sale/Albies and anothe 5 million or so for arbitration players assuming we let Kelenic go. So roughly 66 million. Trading Murphy imo makes sense because it would give us 12 million more to spend and we could hopefully fill 1-2 other spots with cheap players in return. Profar I think we might as well keep if we are trading Murphy. His bat has been okay and I doubt our ability to find a better hitter to DH if Murphy is gone.

Iglesias ERA now almost under 4. He has been solid outside of the first 2 months. Is there any price you would want him back? I am not sold on him at all but if he was willing to take 1 year 5 million I think I would bring him back. Considering apparently no one wanted him at the trade deadline I dont think thats too outside the realm of reality.

Honestly Kyle Tucker isn't the sort of guy I would go over 300 million for. So I am fine if we sit this one out.

I know pitchers are more risky, but Tarik Skuball is who I would spend my dollars on after 2026 if I were the Braves.

Let me give an example of a trade I think is right up AA's alley. The Red Sox owe Trevor Story 50 million over 26/27. He has been fairly consistently a 2 WAR SS. About average offense and good defense but has injury issues. I know its not an exciting option but the options for SS much less a quality defensive SS are slim. The Red Sox have a top SS prospect in Marcelo Mayer who they undoubtedly see as their SS of the future. They also have an issue with having too many LH hitters who need a platoon partner. A straight up trade of Story for Profar would make a lot of sense for both teams. Red Sox save 20 million over 2 years. Profar has good splits vs Lefties over the last 3 years so he could atleast fill that role for them. And with the Green Monster in LF that would help negate some of his defensive weakness. There were rumors the Red Sox were shopping Duran this season because of their lefty heavy roster so maybe we could expand the deal for him or Abreu. Maybe we keep Profar and just eat more of Story's salary to get a better return. They have a pretty good OF prospect in AAA Jhostynxon Garcia that I would target but they probably prefer to keep him and trade Duran. The rumored Devers trade had them taking back Murphy so perhaps they have interest in him. So let me go with a basic framework of Profar/Murphy for Story/Duran. With money/prospects also being included but thats just the core of the deal. I think that gives us a good shot of getting 5 WAR combined from SS/LF for 26/27 without adding significant salary.

I wouldn't mind Story/Duran. I think get a young controllable SS that's cheap will extend the window so Walcott for me from Texas is my main target going into the offseason. He's only 19 and in AA and with the Rangers having Seager he would probably be available for the right deal.
