2025-2026 offseason thread

AA wouldn't make these moves for expensive role players if he didn't have the money to fix the everyday holes. This is a really good sign for the rest of the offseason. I'm guessing Boras is gonna keep Kim until Bichette signs and AA doesn't give me the vibes that he's gonna be played.

I think Yaz will be playing every day vs righties. I think the OF is done being added to.

Definitely think AA gets a SS and SP still though.

Passan:

"The Texas Rangers are in listening mode on star shortstop Corey Seager, which doesn't mean the two-time World Series MVP is by any means going to be moved but reflects the Rangers' willingness to overhaul the team beyond their trade of Marcus Semien. To be abundantly clear: Texas isn't looking to shed the remaining $186 million on his contract. The return would need to overwhelm the Rangers. But they are facing a payroll crunch, and with Pete Alonso landing a $155 million deal and Kyle Schwarber reaping $150 million, Seager's deal is quite appealing. He's only 31, he plays an excellent shortstop and of all the position players ostensibly available via trade or free agency, he is the best."

Nacho and Elder seems like a pretty overwhelming return to me.

Rangers aren't getting a substantial package for the privilege of paying Seager 31 million per year until he's 37. It's not a bad contract comparatively, but it also isn't a bargain.

It would look like something similar to the Devers trade. For us, that is probably something like Murphy, Nacho, Raudy Reyes, and Elder.

I actually think they'll get a really strong package. He's an elite player at a premium position with a salary that is now fair by today's standards.

The salary is still a hurdle for most teams. 6/186 is right around the range he would probably get in FA given that he's already 31 and will be 32 to shortly after the start of the season. And he's not exactly the picture of health, missing an average of 40+ games over the last 3 years. Maybe he gets 200 million but it's certainly not a lock at his age and injury history.

Again, the Devers trade (and somewhat the Stanton trade) should be the baseline for this sort of trade.

It won't be though. If available, he's a way hotter commodity than Devers. Devers is a really good hitter when he's on. Seager is an all-world player who produces 6 WAR seasons, even when he misses time. The salary is absolutely a hurdle, but they won't trade him for anything less than a likely overpay.

you guys are like the homely guy at the bar who can't get any girl to talk to them and when the fat chick comes around at 2 am, you get all giddy.

I don't get spending 12 million a year on an aging LH bat that has declining numbers. Who is he replacing.. Acuna?? Not Harris since they are both LHH.. Profar?? So this is the big bat to fill the DH role??

And how do you see the team signing a SS now.. where does Dubon fit into that scenario?

What this tells me is this is it for the offense. NO WAY they are paying 12 million as a bench piece. Hope I am wrong, but that is how I see this.

A hotter commodity than an 28 year old elite hitter in the middle of the season? I don't know about that.

Troy Tulowitzki trade is also a good baseline. Though it's 10 years old at this point and involved a lot more players, the similarities between Tulo and at the time and Seagar now are pretty hard to ignore.

Older, expensive players on big contracts just don't hold a ton of value.

I agree with Carp on Seager.. he will get a good return, but he won't command a prospect haul. He is closing in hard on his declining years and will be paid very handsomely during those times. You are basically trading for about 2-4 good years out of him and deal with the crap at the end.

Not sure how he's declining...
Vs lhp:
2021 - 125 wrc+
2022 - 110 wrc+
2023 - 125 wrc+
2024 - 110 wrc+
2025 - 126 wrc+

Of course we get him for the even/110 year

Again, AA was handicapped by having to reset the tax last year. The lack of depth was an obvious problem, and AA always overcompensates when he course corrects for problems. Dubon and Yaz are depth because we had none. I suspect Dubon is also a backup plan if whatever AA is trying to do at SS doesn’t work out.

First he counts for 9.5 million against the luxury cap, He is a lifetime .820 OPS vs RHP. .826 last year. He had career bests in walks/strikeouts and exit velocity. Keep in mind his home park in SF is one of the worst hitters parks. He is also a better defender than Acuna/Profar. Combine Yas with a lefty masher like Miguel Andujar and they can combine to post a .850 OPS.

I get that, so the plan is to have him start vrs RHP (I assume you meant RHP).. moving Acuna/Profar to DH and guess Murphy to the bench as a pinch hitter.. so our 15 million dollar catcher rides the bench 70% of the time??
