2025-2026 offseason thread

Gioloto certainly has the higher ceiling of the two. But he comes with more risk. Either one would help the SP depth tremendously. That would give us a solid 6 SPs that you can comfortably expect to be league average as long as they are healthy, pushing Waldrep to the 6th man in this group or pushing Lopez to the pen.

Then you have Holmes, Martin Perez, Ritchie, Wentz, Fuentez, and a slew of AA/AAA prospects as your emergency depth. When your 8th or 9th best SP options are Top 100 prospect caliber SPs in the upper minors, I would say that you have addressed the SP depth very well.

Yaz signed for essentially the same deal as Bader. Bader is a much better defender and also plays CF, but Yaz is a far better hitter and is also a solid defender in the corners.

Certainly doesn't seem like an overpay to me
Yeah I mean Bader being able to play a good CF is a pretty big difference. He’s also four years younger (and did still get less $). I think Yaz could’ve been had for $16m-$18m.

Sure, but Bader's offensive history suggests that he is primarily a 4th OF. He's getting the contract he got entirely based on last season.

Yaz is at least a starting caliber bat. Yes, he's virtually unplayable vs LHP, but vs RHP he would likely represent one of our 4 best bats while playing solid defense in the corners.

If Yaz could have been had for 16-18m in total, we would have done that. But ~10 million is the market price for a player of his ilk.

Adolis Garcia is an inferior player to Yaz in nearly every appreciable way, other than power. Garcia signed with the Phillies for 1/10 million.

I just want another decent bat and SP. Is that too much to freakin’ ask? I don’t care whether the bat can play a position or not at this point.
I am not that desperate. I want guys who are signed at this point to fit a role on the team, not just a guy because we are late in the offseason.

Interesting. I want to fill needs on the team to help ensure said team is competitive in the upcoming season. Crazy thought process I know. Also crazy because filling a need = filling a role.

We have 4-5 good outfield options and it's gonna get crowded when Kim and Murphy get back on the infield so whoever we get could just be a bat type of guy. Ozuna makes more sense everyday as long as he knows his role.

The problems with Ozuna are he cant even fake it out in the field and if he signs with us he’ll still be a 10/5 guy making it difficult to move on when his role becomes more reduced. I mean what is he for us right now? A short side platoon bat? Why not just get Grichuk?

For the last two years at least, we’ve had people say “it’s going to be too crowded when everyone is healthy” as a justification for not fully maximizing the roster 1-26. It never works out that way. This team does not have the luxury of waiting until June and assuming everyone will be healthy and performing.

It just feels like the best bet is to give White the 100 PAs platooning with Yaz until Kim gets back. I can't see much reason to pay MLB money to upgrade over White to someone else for those 100 PAs. What AA actually needs is some low end filler so they have more than exactly 13 position players on the roster.

Getting a SP who isn't a walking injury is still more important, and money must be running short by now.

Eli White was roughly league average last year vs LHP and has a .581 OPS vs them for his career. No thanks.

Grichuk seems to be the play. He wasn’t very good last year but at least has proven to be a LHP masher in his career. And if he’s toast we only need him for a month and half or so.

Ideally, we get an another real hitter, let the two catchers alternate days, and let Yaz be the 4th outfielder who spells each starting outfielder once a week or so. But, that’s obviously not going to happen in all likelihood.

Really wanted Donovan but didn't think there was much of chance after the Dubon and Kim deals even with Kim's injury. He would have looked good on the team, though.

Can't argue with this at all, unless signing a bat like Grichuk means AA can't afford a legit SP.
