2025-2026 offseason thread

Sorry I was off on the years. Olson extension was 8/168. Even if total AAV wasn't similar, the total number was easily better than we offered Freeman.

Freddie and his agent certainly hold some blame. But AA holding firm on 5 years and then committing more money (and prospects) to Olson was insanely dumb.

Years and AAV matter my guy. Olson being 4 years younger was the reason for the longer deal. Freeman is currently getting paid through his age 37 season. Olson is getting paid through his age 35 season with an option for 1 more. Clear to me that AA was comfortable paying a 1B through age 36.

“Not true. At least if we’re being disingenuous.”

Freeman is making less now than he would have with the Braves. He literally fired his agent for the failure. Just take the L, my guy.
Its not being disingenuous. I wasn't talking about Freddie taking less money to go to LA. I was replying to the part of his post about us offering more money to Freddie than they gave to Olson. That part is not true, at least in total money.

Olson was offered 168m guaranteed. Freddie was offered 150m. Whether the offer was less in AAV isn't really that relevant. The main sticking point in negotiations was that Freeman wanted 6 years, and AA didn't want to go past 5 years. Had we offered 6 years (or 8 years) and 168 million, it's extremely likely that Freeman would be here today.

I can understand the logic in regards to years and age. I even understood it at the time. But that's the benefit of hindsight. We can evaluate whether it was a good decision or not. Considering how well Freeman has aged and the acquisition cost of Olson, it's a no brainer AA made the wrong choice.

Carp will never admit when he’s wrong

To be clear though Carp… I do enjoy you as a poster but you are often very aggressive about some pretty questionable takes

I'm not sure why there is a huge argument about Olson and Freddie as if if Freddie being here would make any difference whatsoever.
Right? People get in their feelings because he’s a legend, but it’s not like there’s been much difference between Freeman and Olson since the switch.

Keeping Freeman brought a WS championship to Atlanta, so ultimately it was the right call at the time.

However, not trading Freeman led to exactly what I was warning about years ago. The Braves didn't add talent (either minor league or major league) which limited the talent pool more than it could have been. Then when he became a FA and wanted (or his agent wanted) a deal too rich for AA's taste, they let him walk for nothing and traded talent to bring in Olson, then paid him big money. In a way it was a double whammy.

If you don't trade Freeman then you pretty much HAVE to sign Freeman. That didn't happen. And the Braves farm, while producing at least one complimentary piece each year, has been too shallow for years to really help fill holes through trade.
