Keeping Freeman brought a WS championship to Atlanta, so ultimately it was the right call at the time.
However, not trading Freeman led to exactly what I was warning about years ago. The Braves didn't add talent (either minor league or major league) which limited the talent pool more than it could have been. Then when he became a FA and wanted (or his agent wanted) a deal too rich for AA's taste, they let him walk for nothing and traded talent to bring in Olson, then paid him big money. In a way it was a double whammy.
If you don't trade Freeman then you pretty much HAVE to sign Freeman. That didn't happen. And the Braves farm, while producing at least one complimentary piece each year, has been too shallow for years to really help fill holes through trade.

I clamored for Freeman to be traded for lots of players. Some would have worked out and some not. The point was to build the talent base given the expected return coming back for Freeman so that WHEN the rebuild was over there would be talent waves in place to both feed the team and use for trades. I didn't think the Braves would win a WS before Freeman became a FA. They did. I was wrong. The worst part is the timing of this post. He clamored for years that we should have traded Freeman for Kyle Tucker. That move may or may not have brought the team a WS title. But it would put the Braves in a big hole for 2026 considering Tucker just bolted for FA himself and signed the biggest AAV contract in history.
The Braves did all of those things while keeping Freeman. So, what’s your argument? That they didn’t do it more?I clamored for Freeman to be traded for lots of players. However, the point of the post was that IF you keep Freeman, you forego the opportunity to use him to build the talent base, which means you commit yourself to a de facto signing no matter the cost or else face the double indemnity of lost value in terms of trade and lost talent capital needed to acquire his replacement. Which is what happened.
I was absolutely for trading Freeman. But I was also absolutely for signing him at whatever cost AFTER he wasn't traded.
You don’t want another backup infielder? We’re fine in the pitching department.Reverse jinx.
In Carp’s defense, I do believe he conceded that they didn’t actually find Noah’s Ark that one time. That's not true
