2025 Around The League Thread

Even before the rotation injuries started stacking up, they have a much better pen and they didn't run out 1500 PAs worth of guys hitting at 20% or lower than the major league average.
"Protection" has pretty much disproven as a rock-solid indicator of much of anything, but what you say is so true. You can see it in how carefully they pitch to a couple of Braves' players knowing that 6 through 9 most of the year has been a cakewalk. And it's not only because they haven't hit well. They also haven't made the pitcher work.

I was talking moreso this season.

But if he needs surgery, he's done for this year and probably the start of next year. And he isn't gonna hit like this forever. He would certainly be done as a pitcher.

Not to mention all the the other aging/injury prone players they're paying for the next decade plus.

Freeman is on the way down. Betts maybe cooked. Glasgow is never healthy. Snell is already having arm trouble plus he's so erratic over his career.
Sounds like the Braves. Yet, the Dodgers are still in first place.

You said "Somehow teams don’t make money yet owners keep the teams for funsies."

Quite clearly they own sports franchises for more reasons than the few million they might make in a given year. So yes, they are often owned "for funsies."

Plenty of franchises have posted losses over the years. Do they want to post losses? Of course not. You would rather be profitable, than not profitbale. But you don't buy a sports franchise to make money every year. It's relative pennies compared to the increase in yearly value of your investment.

If you think of a baseball team like a beach house, you are kind of getting on the right track.

It doesn't produce income, but it always appreciates.

I don't think everything from Battery and revenue is plowed back into payroll but I don't think Liberty sluffs off that much cash either.

Cardinals were 1st place in 2022, last place in 2023, and had a winning record but missed playoffs in 2024. Attendance continuing to dwindle despite having a winning record this season.

Next season is absolutely huge for the braves. If they aren't back to playoff good, they could follow this same pattern. This would obviously kill payroll.

But the Braves have a better fan base than the Cardinals.
