2025 Around The League Thread

Too early to start talking about deadline targets?

I think we clearly have to add a SP, right? It's nice that Elder isn't the worst pitcher in the majors anymore, but he should not be relied on to be anything more than your basic #5 pitcher. AJSS is a rotation mainstay from here on out, imo, but he's still a little too inconsistent to rely on down the stretch. Everyone else in the rotation has innings limits/injury concerns. And I don't think you can count on Lopez coming back and providing the same level of production that he gave us last year.

It's hard to know who will be buyers and sellers right now, but here are some names we should have interest in from teams currently unlikely to reach the playoffs:

Twins pitchers: Take your pick here. Pablo Lopez is everyone's favorite, but they have 3-4 other guys with great stuff. But be prepared to pay, as all of these guys have multiple years on control. We likely aren't getting any of them without giving up Baldwin or AJSS at a minimum.

Toronto, Chris Bassitt: 2.95 ERA/2.93 FIP. 9.8 K/9 and a 1.6 BB/9. Free agent at the end of the year.

Baltimore, Zach Eflin: 3.00 ERA/3.97 FIP. Only 3 starts so far but he's due back in the next week or so. A mid rotation pitcher that can pitch like a No. 2 at times. Free agent at the end of the year.

Pitt, Andrew Heaney: 3.18 ERA/ 3.81 FIP. Mid Rotation starter, on pace for a career year. Free agent at the end of the year.

A SP rental seems like the obvious move right now. Someone to help get the team to the finish line. The goal is always going to have Strider and Sale hopefully headlining the playoff rotation. If they are right then that's as good as it gets.

our old friend Soroka is back pitching today (bicep strain) and looks great so far.. I know the Braves could have just signed him for the 10 mill.. but maybe 5 million and a couple lottery picks if he stays healthy and productive through the summer... I am betting he will.

Any of those three could be had for spare parts

For the most part I agree. Though Bassitt will have a premium attached to him if he continues to pitch this way. The Jack Flaherty trade last year should be the baseline if he does that.

Let's not start sucking our own dick yet. It's a getaway day game. Those are notorious for teams not giving a shit on offense.

LOL...Get away day game.... this is as classic as Waldrep is probably just working on something.. he really doesn't suck excuse you hear homers throw around all the time.

Guessing the gNats didn't get that memo..

it is a dumb excuse as to why a pitcher is doing well or not well... That is basically saying Sale's good game last week against the Roxs wasn't because he is good, but because the Rox's didn't care.

No one, not even me, is saying Soroka is going to be an ace.. but handled correctly, he would have been a hell of a lot better than the absolute NOTHING AA did this past offseason.

You made this series of posts too soon

Ehhh, what???

This is Soroka's 2nd start of the season and it's May. He got blown up his first start too.

He was 100% not worth spending 10 million on. The pitcher we should have got on the cheap was Jose Quintana. He signed for a measly 4 million and he is a mid-to-back of the rotation workhorse. He he has a 2.83 ERA through his first 5 starts (4.37 FIP).

Soroka would have been a nice flier. But 10 million was way too much for someone who hasn't been a legit starter 6 years
I can definitely see that argument.. but I might not have used him as a 'try to go as long as you can' type starter, but as a hybrid long man/reliever.. He could be a weapon as a bulk (2-4 innings) guy in bullpen games when you want to give starters extra rest.

I would have been fine with him.. I wouldn't be mad at any effort to sign some pitching (even if they sucked to start the season)... but to do nothing and then throw the BS that they didn't want to block the likes of Anderson and Holmes... come on...

Signing a warm body for 10 million isn't any better of a solution. That's just making a move to say that you made a move.
