2025 Around The League Thread

It’s insane to argue that players should get paid less, and that’s what will happen if you implement a salary cap.

Owners want to put the least amount possible into their teams and then complain when they can’t compete. Stars sell. Winning sells. Get some, do some, and then you’ll have more money to spend. Putting the bare minimum into your investment and then complaining about other team’s advantages is whiny bullshit.

Besides LA and NYC are shitholes right? What advantage do they have

I would raise the floor considerably and I would put all the teams on national TV, so that all media rights get split evenly. A rising tide lifts all ships.

For the "cap" I would just make harsher rules on the luxury tax to dissuade teams from going over it.

Most teams are not spending money because they are not making money. Sure the owners are rich and the the teams value is where the money is.. but you shouldn't expect a team to operate at a loss just to compete. The Mets (one of the biggest markets) operated at a huge loss in 2022.. mostly because they tried to out spend... The Dodger$ are never going to have that issue because they have a regional tv deal that nets them a billion dollars.

The whole owners are greedy speak is over played. The brave's ownership doesn't look to make a profit off the team.. they pump whatever the team makes back into the team. But they will never get close to being able to afford what the Dodger$ can...

so coaching, player talent, injuries.. all that is part of the competitive sphere of the sport.. and that is fine.. but when a team can simply out spend that competitive equality.. then it makes the sport less attractive.

is the problem really the dodgers or is the real problem a lot of owners don’t care enough to spend tens of millions to improve thier teams? it’s the latter.

funny how when the braves won the WS a few years ago, there was no mention about how unfair the payroll system was then.

The profit margin is significantly smaller for a team like the Marlins.

If the league doesn't want a cap, then I think much harsher rules would work.. and get rid of the deferred loop hole..

The braves can compete money wise. I'm not stumping for the braves

I have no issues with there being no salary cap. There is an inhereit risk basked into those systems because MLB contracts are guarnateed and every so often a Chris Davis type deal appears. Not to mention that baseball, more than any other sport, the best team often doesn't even end up in the championship game/series.

I will say that there needs to be a salary floord. The Pirates and Marlins off the world who profit off being bad/low payroll has to stop.

And there needs to be a rule about the defferement bullshit the Dodgers do. Let them spend their money but paying it out over 30 years is absurd.

They won't ever get a salary cap to pass but they can meet in the middle and make it really harsh on the teams for going over. Take the first 3 rounds of picks and double the money penalty. They'll slack off then.

“They don’t make money” because they put a shit product on the field and can’t retain fans because of it. It’s a cycle that yes, greedy owners perpetuate.

LOL the Braves make money. Like holy shit dude. They absolutely do not pump all the profits back into the team.

Miami should be a baseball hot spot. It’s not because of shit, cheap ownership.
I won't deny that Loria screwed over whatever chance the Marlins had at creating a large baseball following in FL. But at this point, the damage is done and it's too late to reverse it. I mean the Rays are cheap too, but they are actually managed well and make the playoffs on a semi-regular basis. They can't get fans either.

I would be surprised if the Braves make much money.

Most major sports franchises don't actually make money. Most barely break even. The value comes from owning the team, which tends to increase in value exponentially over the years.

If you have money to burn and want to see your initial investment go up 500%-1000% in 10-20 years, buy a sports franchise.
