2025 Spring Training Thread

I have no real qualms with the Anderson for Suarez swap on.a valuation basis. Suarez is probably a slightly better pitcher.

Still though, I'm disappointed with how the bullpen situation was handled. After auditioning a boat-load of guys, we had one guy exceed expectations in Enyel De Los Santos. Are De Los Santos or Daysbel really the solution though in high-leverage spots? Are guys like Suarez and Neris really bullpen pieces on a playoff team? Perhaps it all works out okay and we have some good fortune on health and performance. Sure feels like we're livin' dangerously though.

I’m glad we’re moving on from Anderson, Suarez is just holding a place for Kimbrel and nobody is going to care when he’s DFA’d.

I know Anderson being traded looks bad, but I really think he can still be an effective pitcher for us in the right situation.

Sale - Schwellenbach - Lopez - Holmes - AJSS, with either Holmes or AJSS handling bullpen/spot starter duties when Strider returns is a huge win.

I just really wish we would have gone out and gotten a legit bullpen arm via trade or free agency. But I feel pretty confident that Alex will make a move quickly if it's needed.

If that’s all we could get for Anderson I would have just cut him.

Former top 100 prospect who had some really nice breaking ball peripherals. Last two years have been rough but the Angels are one of the worst at developing pitchers and the Braves are one of the best. It’s amazing we got anything at all for him. Maybe we fix him… obviously has arm talent. I’m not sure Anderson has any arm talent anymore.

Anderson was always overrated due to his draft position. People think about the MLB draft like the NFL and they're not remotely the same. Being third overall in baseball doesn't mean a whole lot. The MLB draft is way more of a crapshoot.

Anderson's only real contribution was in our WS run. He came up huge and should be recognized for it. But he was always a deeply flawed pitcher and was never going to be a long term contributor.

One more high end reliever would be ideal, especially of the LHP variety (*cough* Minter *cough*), but the bullpen will be fine.

Padres opening with King-Cease-TBA-Pivetta.

Based on when our guys threw, looks like we open with Sale-Lopez-Schwellenbach-Holmes. That would also mean AJSS’ first start comes at LA. I wonder if we might try to go with AJSS on Sunday and save Holmes for LA. Not sure what the better route is - doesn’t really seem like a great option either way.

Now that he's gone, I guess you can finally put a sock in it. We all get it. You never liked the pick even though it fit into a larger strategy that ultimately didn't work out.

And that itself was worth the draft pick.

Now no one from my WS front page is left. Oh wait, Jesse Chavez is back!

Riley, Ozzie, Arcia, and Dylan Lee?

And that is just the WS roster. Ozuna, Acuna, and Strider were on the regular season squad.

I mean… he was a top 15 prospect in all MLB…

Which just goes to show you how difficult it often is to grade prospects and how terrible a lot of the lists are. Once he got to the majors and we got data on his pitches it was clear he didn't have good enough stuff to warrant that high ranking.

If we ever get statcast in every minor league park prospect lists will improve tremendously.

Dude, he was billed as a mid rotation SP as a prospect. And that's exactly what he was for about 2 seasons. That's why he was ranked highly. Not every highly ranked pitching prospect is going to considered to have future ace potential. Just stop with your bad takes.
