2025 Trade Deadline Thread

It would have to be a team with a young MLB SS playing out of position, or a team with a SS prospect ready to go in 2026 that's blocked by a current MLB SS, or a 3 team trade where another seller sends their MLB SS in exchange for prospects from the 3rd team.

So yes, there's a very narrow band of possibilities, which is why it's unlikely to happen. But the Rays and Cards and Padres have the ammo to make it happen if they wanted to fix their catching position, and I think the Rays are the most likely to do it. Murphy just seems like a guy they would love.
The TB SS scares me. 34% k rate at AAA would scare me on Carson Williams.

I would do Murphy for Winn straight up but don’t think the cardinals will trade a starter mid-season and turn to a prospect for the rest of the year. And I don’t think they’ll be willing to deal Wetherholt at all. But Winn would be a great get IMO

He has highs and lows and the lows are his k's no doubt. If he stays in the minors all year he's on pace for over 200 k's. He has the pop and defense you want so maybe they can cut down on the k's like others have. But him, Wetherholt, and De Vries are the 3 guys we should be targeting. The Rays need pitching so do the Padres so Holmes could be on the table to sweeten the pot.

They might bc Murphy is controlled for the next 3 years. Wetherholt is probably ready and probably wouldn't be a huge drop off bc Winn is having a down year.

Only his second full season, 103 vs 98 wRC+ in 24 & 25 respectively. Not sure I’d consider this year a down year. League average bat with great defense at SS as a 23 year old…sign me up.

I'd take Winn no doubt but 3 years of a top 5 catcher at a position you lack while having your top prospect at AAA also being a SS would be tempting for the Cards. I still don't think AA trades him though.

Yes, mlb ready guys, which are what contenders want to keep.

Every team wants to keep every prospect. That's why they drafted/signed them.

If those prospects aren't on the MLB squad currently, or if they were just promoted, they aren't essential players to their 2025 success.

Most teams have more than this season in mind.

Teams buying at the deadline do so with knowledge that they have to sacrifice future help for help this year. I mean we see big names get exchanged every year for big prospects. Why would us trading Murphy be any different?

We need a quick IL stint for Wynn so they bring up Wetherholt and he hits so well they feel comfortable trading Winn.

We 100% should be. Ozuna, Murphy, Holmes, Bummer, and Pierce Johnson could bring back some pretty useful pieces 26 and on
I don't think Prince Albert nor Bummer bring much back, even if you pay the 2025 salary.. those two are more salary relief next year if you feel internal options (JJ/Lopez/Lara/Suero) could easily replace them. I would do it and use the 16 million to buy something more elite in the pen personally. I am also fielding calls on Holmes/Ozuna/and Iggy for sure... you better wow me for Meth...

I forgot to mention Iggy. He's gone for sure. Yeah Murphy has to be an overpay. Holmes is at peak value right now also but he's cheap

It hasn't been Anthopoulos' MO to trade veterans for prospects, so I don't know why he would start now. I think he's have to be absolutely bowled over to trade Murphy. I can see Ozuna being moved because you can cycle Baldwin and Murphy through the DH spot, but unless he can get an absolute haul (Winn and a couple of prospects), Murphy won't be going anywhere.

9.5 million for Bummer next year is gonna scare people off. At least Johnson's is a club option.
