2026 Payroll

Fair. He’s a perfectly good bench bat that allows Acuna and Profar to rotate through DH.
If we add another starting caliber OFer either in FA or by trade (which we seem to want to do based on the Buxton deadline rumors) then Fraley would be pretty useless to this team, other than a game pinch hitter or an injury reserve. And TBH, if we added someone like Buxton, then I would rather have a stud OF defender getting that last roster spot, or some super utility guy that can play 5+ positions on the field

If we don't add anyone else worthwhile to the OF, I'd agree this was a poor move, much like releasing Luareano last year.

In the interview AA gave where he mentioned needs, he did not mention anything about an OFer. He mentioned SS and SP, but not OF. None of the prediction sites mention the Braves chasing a real bat, neither OF or DH.

So we can take that to mean 1 of 3 things:

1. He simply forgot to mention OF as a need (highly unlikely).
2. He was talking about FA targets and wants to trade for an OF (fan conspiracy stuff).
3. He does not see OF as a need for the roster.

I suspect 3, and the reason he doesn't "need" an OF is because he can't afford one, just like last year when Laureano was dumped in favor of the cheap hot garbage he put on the bench. Rotating current bats through DH is the plan, and there will once again be zero MLB depth to cover any injuries.

I really hope I'm wrong.

Again, it's odd that he would pursue Buxton at the deadline if payroll constraints were a big issue. It's also odd he would pursue him if he didn't think the OF or some other type of big bat wasn't needed.

He probably didn't mention it bc he knows his list is already long and didn't wanna give the fans or media any ammo on him if he didn't acquire one. If he can get one then fine but if not then fine is probably how he views it. But a legit depth piece like Polanco or Donovan is needed really bad that can cover when an injury does occur bc it's gonna happen.

The moves up to this point make perfect sense if you expect AA is only able to take on a small amount of payroll.

The moves up to this point make perfect sense if you expect AA is focusing on adding impact players and making room to go whale hunting.

Missing the playoffs with how well the battery is doing and how they went cheap last year kind of leaves a black eye on them that's why I expect AA to load up this offseason. He's already said McGuirk has given him to ok to get whoever so we'll see.

Being willing to take on Kim's $13M, or Buxton's $15M isn't exactly something that screams "we have a ton of payroll available".

It tells me he has about $15M to allocate towards position players.

Those moves (or theoretical move in the case of Buxton) are definitely better indicators that we have a lot of payroll flexibility vs cutting marginal players like Kinley and Fraley are indicators that we don't have much money.

how can we really trust that the Braves were really trying to get Buxton. sure they might have asked about him.. but can anyone really trust they were seriously making a push for him

Agreed. And they give us a sense for how much money might be available.

Can’t trust anything, but we know for sure they were willing to pay Kim $13M, so it stands to reason there’s at least that much cash available plus whatever they figured to spend on pitching.

It could also be because he has multi-year commitments to 3 starting OFs already and either doesn't feel like he should list backup OF as a major need or doesn't think it's politic to advertise that he is looking to replace one.

Yes, the fan justification is in full swing. He could have easily said he wanted to fill the DH hole.

He didn’t.
