2026 ST Thread

According to ChatGPT, here are the whiff rates on SS#1's pitches last season...
Fastball: 15-16%
Slider: 48.3-48.6%
Curve: 53.7%

The whiff rates on his secondary pitches are really, really impressive, and it's carried over to ST this season. I'm not saying he's gonna be good, but I'm just questioning how those pitches rate below or avg with elite whiff rate vs them. It doesn't make sense to me.

That could just be lack of consistency with the pitches. Probably hanging too many. Savant shows .400 slugging on those pitches but a sub .200 BA for both combined. Thats like .200 Isolated slugging. But thats good imo. Consistency shoul naturally improve with time and reps.

We have now reached peak spring training optimism. The article on top of my mlb app is “Strider isn't quite the same pitcher -- but he might be even better”.

Holy hell people are dense.

We’re not even close to the peak… all the focus has been on the pitching - wait until Acuna and Ozzie get back and the talk of 70/70 and the greatest offense of all time starts ramping up….

That article is perfect fine and is saying something completely accurate, which we all agree with: The current version of Strider cannot pitch the same way he did when he threw 100 (i.e., throw strikes and assume they can’t hit it), and he will need to actually pitch with command of his full arsenal if he is going to have success.

Yeah, the article gives an optimistic account of how that’s going, but who cares, it is spring. Let’s have hope. Hefner talks about working with Strider’s mechanics and identifying things he’s not doing but should be doing, which is literally the only thing I want to hear that Jeremy Hefner is working on.

Frankly, despite his beautiful FIP, in 2022-2023 Strider only averaged 4 bWAR per 162 games, meaning he didn’t actually get the results he “should have.” If he learns to actually pitch and the stuff rebounds even a tick, then yeah, he could be a 4+ WAR pitcher. Will that happen? Who knows, but we have no choice but to try and see.

Hey. Get out of here with your optimistic thoughts. Don’t you know it’s all gloom and doom?

JK of course. There are concerns, but there is also room for optimism. If Strider is not going to throw 100 anymore, then I want him to learn to pitch with the tools he has. That’s a positive.

I hope Acuna is healthy, and someone will step up and fill the role that JP should have. Every star was not a star before they emerged.

The headline of the article is funny, but the article itself is really informative and very interesting. I am impressed with Hefner so far and optimistic that he can help our pitching improve.
