She’s been in prison for years already, more than her risk to the greater population would warrant. If we’re going to be serious about criminal justice reform, part of it is not using needlessly long prison terms for people who aren’t a danger to society.

I also think you’re overestimating the impact Tina Peters can possibly have politically on the outside. She’s a loon spouting nonsense that all but the most credulous MAGA supporters will rightfully ignore. By granting her clemency, I think Polis actually defangs Trump and Peters by no longer allowing her to serve as a political martyr. The “stolen” 2020 election stuff is the playground of the thethe’s of the world. Most people just want gas prices to go down and will happily ignore Peters.

Clemency is for people who atleast admit what they dud was illegal. Its a requirement. The onlyvtinecshe has ever admitted what she did was illegal was on her clemency application. And when she gets out she is juts going to spit in everyone's face by never admitting she did anything illegal. Democrats can take their high road and shove it. They will just cite this as proof she did nothing wrong. Watch her get a big payout from the Trump regime. Just absolutely disgusting. And to be clear I was just as disgusted by Bidens pardons. I ultimately disagree with you on principle here. I think the push to treat Peters as an innocent political prisoner was always a joke, but there are plenty of less extreme ways to ensure Tina Peters does not harm the people of Colorado without spending a decade in prison. I don’t really care if a prisoner feels adequately remorseful or punished for their crimes. Tina Peters was rightfully committed a crime, and spent several years in prison for it. I’m not going to waste my outrage pretending she’s some major puppet master of the broader 2020 election denialism or that her walking the streets as a right-wing celebrity in 2026 instead of 2030 will matter. Her individual liberties did not need to be stripped for as long as they would have been to reduce any risk of recidivism or improve public safety.

And while I understand the point you’re making, it does bring me to the question of where exactly you find state overreach objectionable. You’re pretty reliably against the police state and skeptical of government power. I find the state sentencing a woman to essentially spend the rest of her life in prison for crimes she will have no real chance of ever repeating to be overly punitive in a way that goes against my definition of justice. By demanding that response from the state against an individual due to the larger social/political environment, I’d argue you’re just using the same logic as those who celebrate and promote the war on drugs.
