4/13/15 GDT Callaspo at 2nd, batting 2nd

If you would have told me at the beginning of the year one of these teams would be 6-1 and the other 1-6 I wouldn't have thought the Braves would be the team with the winning record. Great start to the season.

Yep. Couldn't ask for better.

But Grilli is under contract for a couple more years, so you don't have to trade him at the deadline.

He's pushing 40 and unless we're somehow in it for the division, there isnt much reason to keep him.

This ispretty much a retooling type of year anyway, i'd trade whatever assets we have into more prospects.

Staved off elimination one more day . . . and wire-to-wire is still on the table.

And that's why I said if we're still in it.

Marlins are in trouble. Lots of injuries already and they can't afford to lose games with the Nats in the division.

braves are second in runs scored and first in fewest runs allowed in the NL.

that's not the fluky run differential you'd expect from a 6-1 team that everybody "knows" will fall apart any day now.

True, but teams can get hot and score a lot of runs over a small sample size. I just don't see how this team maintains that pace. We all knew our pitching would be good though. But, if we suffer any significant injuries, we're boned in that department.

The runs scored thing is heavily skewed thanks to the 12 run game.

Our pitching looks the part. I really like 90% of what Shelby is. If he can just develop some consistency with his secondary pitches then he will be really good.

Small sample and everything, but CJ and Callaspo are hitting while Jace isn't. CJ hasn't gotten a start since the 10th, and Callaspo just went 3-6 vs the Mets' RHed pitchers.

If you have a "soft platoon" this is exactly how you do it.

I get why Fredi is doing it, I just think maybe he's delusional. Granted if we make the playoffs then hats off to him. If we don't then screw him for making me watch Callaspo over Jace.

Here's another look at that pitching motion from the Marlins Carter Capps (from Twitter):

well sure...
but wouldn't we all have figured coming in that this team going 6-1 to start would have been winning 2-1 games each time?

anyway, i won't go buying my world series tickets yet. just an interesting observation a week in.

Aside from a questionable starting lineup and the horrible challenge, Fredi managed well tonight. The double switch to get Martin an extra inning tonight was something a lot of us were upset with him about last night. Gotta give Fredi some credit for learning from his mistake.

Give Fredi no credit, ever. He's an idiot. Trade him at the deadline for cash considerations.

I don't get why that isn't against the rules.

It may technically be against the rules, but my guess is that it's taking advantage of a loophole where the pitcher has to 'begin' the pitch on the rubber but doesn't go into detail beyond that.

They should probably add something additional that either a) says you can only take your pivot foot off the rubber once your plant foot is down, or b) at least specify that you can't jump before making a pitch.

It's ridiculous that you should be allowed to jump closer to the plate before you pitch. Same way you wouldn't allow him to just step forward before starting the pitch. Just because he can effectively do it during his motion shouldn't make it acceptable.

It looks like he's jumping about 2 feet forward, which is effectively adding more than 3 mph on all of his pitches, from the batter's perspective.
