4/14 Minors Game Thread for Thursday...

Newcomb...
5.0 ip 1 h 1 er 4 bb 4 k

After the trade, Shanks mentioned that Braves scouts listed TB pitcher Matt Moore as a comp for Newcomb. Big lefty with high K rate and high BB rate . . . throws a ton of pitches and can't get deep into games. That's looking like a reasonable outcome, and I'd be just fine with that level of production if he could stay more healthy than Moore.

Saw some good comments about Ruiz's defense at 3B tonight as well. There is a decent chance he may get a shot in Atlanta before the year is over.

If Olivera is shown the door, I can envision a scenario where Adonis moves to LF and Ruiz takes over at 3B. Of course, Ruiz will have to continue to play well for that to happen.

Adonis needs to hit, and right now, he couldn't hit the backside of a bull with a base fiddle.

I'd put Rio at 3rd and keep Mallex/Ender in the LF/CF.

Really great to see Ruiz off to a good start. He was so bad last year that even a 1 week hot streak is big news. Glad he is doing it at AAA, anything he would do at AA would be jaded because he would have been repeating the level. He's a guy I root extra hard for because I liked him way back in the draft and I like being right :)

The same Adonis who's second on the club in hitting behind Markakis???

.300/.417/.400/.817

There are lots of people underperforming, but come on now.

Really encouraging returns from Fried so far - for a guy coming off such a long layoff he seems to look pretty good.

We have a lot of guys that need to get the walks down just a tick.... newcombe, ellis, sims, touki, sanchez, fried

We also have several 'under the radar' guys that are coming off good start(s)..
Soroka, Weigel, Lawlor and Povse.. These guys are often forgotten but have a chance to make some noise. Whalen is also in that group, but he had some struggles in his first start.

Rome and Miss are just jinxed.. Rome gave up slim lead in the 9th to spoil and outstanding start by Fried. Custred, who was awesome last year, struggled again.. then Taylor Lewis did the rest.. Bummer..

Newcomb pitched well when he wasn't giving up free passes.. left with a 2-1 lead that was promptly given up and they are now tied 2-2..

All in all, the starters looked great across the board. cut down on some walks and they would have been dominate

Technically even with the BB's they were issuing they were still very dominant. I mean, when you aren't allowing hits and K'ing hitters at a high rate, the walks won't hurt you that much. And if I'm looking at minor league pitchers as a whole, thats the last trait they usually master.

I guess this is just a case of how you define dominate.. I agree they have been Outstanding.. and control can come later.. but I guess I just don't use Dominate unless I think it was that.

I wouldn't have given up Simmons for that...but I guess the thought was swanson + Newcombe was better than Simons
