So protection gets you walked more in addition to slugging more? I figured the whole idea of protection was to get walked less. So confusing!

So his SLG spiked in June before Kemp got to Atlanta. Kemp was then traded to Atlanta at the beginning of August, and Freeman's SLG stayed up, but his BB% spiked. Freeman is still walking 16% of the time while being protected by Kemp.
