5/13: GDT at Marlins

Just curious... is whip good or bad according whether it's walks or hits? Newcomb had a whip of 1.20 entering game, and has a whip of 1.00 today. Would it be better if he had a line of 4 h 1 bb as opposed to 1 h 4 bb?

We are talking about the Marlins and not the Cubs/Nats/Brewers or DBacks that can actually kill you if you walk people. The Marlins are the bottom of the barrel of ineptness.

Newcomb is just like Folty, you don't know what you get but when they really figure it out, they are TOR pitchers.

20 straight scoreless innings from Newcomb. People need to lay off him. He's been our ace so far this season. Yeah his control escapes him occasionally but he's much more consistent than last season.

Even assuming that the hits are singles then you would rather have the 1 h with 4 BB if you are the pitcher.

Newcomb last 3 starts...
19.0 ip 5 h 0 er 8 bb 20 k
Era = 0.00
Whip = 0.68

Think you guys are being unreasonable toward newcomb?

I'd much rather it be hits because those are more due to luck than walks.

But of course, hits are better for the offense than walks... Just think walks are more predictive going forward

You realize he had a 3.07 FIP entering game, right?

He's pitched extremely well this year. 3.08 FIP on the season. A lot of contributing numbers to get to that but the one I like the most is the 0.58 HR/9 against him.

Probably Sam Freeman next inning. He's rested. The Marlins have an all-righted lineup today. But Freeman is pretty good against righties. Plus if we brought in a righty, the Marlins would probably bring in Bour and maybe Dietrich.

Vs 3 teams that are trash offensively. Good offensive teams will turn those lead off walks into runs...

But he’s been outstanding other than that.

I like .208 BAA (entering game). This is actually in line with his number at A, A+, AA, and AAA. Batters just can't seem to square him up
