5/13: GDT at Marlins

I've always thought Folty's breaking stuff looked loopy as hell. There's a reason why hitters are able to stay on it so much after seeing 95+ MPH fastballs. I wish he could learn the slider that deGrom or Syndergaard throw.

Nothing wrong with that.

Yes he has better stuff than Newcomb

....but like Newcomb they both have issue up in their head and when you walk a lot of people, good teams will make you pay.

Newcomb is taking advantage of pitching against bad teams that are not really good and he should, no issue with that.

Would I trust them in a 7th game against the Nats/Cubs/Cards/Dodgers or DBacks?

Hell no.

My problem is you both trash Folty who is just as capable as Newcomb and you call yourselves Braves fans. That is what is sad.

I think the major difference is that Newcomb never seems to get hit hard. Yeah, he walks some people to get himself in trouble, but most of the contact he gives up is weak. Folty on the other hand gives up some absolute missiles when he's struggling.

Thanks. Newk 23 going into today (assuming it hasnt updated yet for today's result ). Have to think he is close to top 15. Any studies on how a pitcher can control contact?

I think it's safe to say they can control how hard a ball is hit. The impressive number isn't the exit velocity against but the barrels against per PA which Newk is listed as 3rd lowest for pitchers with 100 batted balls against.

For the last time, I am not trashing Folty - I like him a lot, and I want him to succeed.

You're overall point about good-hitting teams making them pay is astute, and I agree 100% that all these walks will hurt Newcomb eventually... But the one thing I disagree w/ you on is the idea that Folty's stuff is better than Newcomb's. Sean's never been hit hard, at any level. He had nowhere near his best fastball today, and the only hard-hit ball was the almost HR by Maybin (which was probably the best swing I've ever seen from Cameron, ever).

Meanwhile, Folty has games where 100mph heaters get smoked all over the yard, and it doesn't seem to matter all that much who's standing in the batter's box when that happens.

Again, I like Folty - want him to reach his immense potential. But he's been starting games for us a while now, and I'm just starting to lose faith that he'll reach the ceiling. Even if he doesn't though, he's still a good pitcher and a valuable piece.

I didn’t get to see much of this game, but the box says Albies was beating the ball into the ground. Did it look like he was trying to overcompensate in an attempt to stop hitting the ball in the air? Or was he making poor contact on offspeed pitches?
